M. Night Shyamalan

I'm going to see TRAP this week. I've seen quite a few Shyamalan films, but I've also skipped over some important ones. What is your favorite film he's done?

Comments

I personally really appreciate 'Signs' and 'The Village' quite a bit. I also am in the small minority of people who can appreciate 'The Happening' even though it is certainly not at the top of his filmography. I would be very curious to hear your thoughts on his film, 'Old.' One of the movies I felt like requires a second look. Perhaps not his finest, but like each of his films, very interesting concepts.

Yeah, I don’t hear people talk about it much. It’s always The Sixth Sense or Signs but this one is special. A few parts don’t work for me, yet I still think about it and revisit several moments. It’s a solid fall movie.

Sixth Sense probably his best constructed, but Signs is the one I'd like to go back and watch again the most. I loved The Village when it came out...but I was pretty young haha.

raskolnikov

That's the one I havent seen. >< BUt I always assumed it was one of his best. You sell it well.

hahaha

I agree. It's one of those movies that as a kid, I watched all the time. And thus it has a warm place in my heart.

Signs is a sentimental fav for me as well

Great soundtrack. It's underrated film too.

The Village I guess but it’s still a heavily flawed movie. The amazing soundtrack CARRIES it. Shyamalan is definitely one of the worst filmmakers working today. I can never forgive the man who made both Afterearth and that Avatar movie.

Maybe it's cliche to say this but I genuinely think The Sixth Sense is brilliant and that the twist actually makes sense and makes the second viewing better, unlike the twist in The Usual Suspects which renders most of the film pointles. I also distinctly remember Toni Collette's performance leaving an impact on me. She felt so authentic and there was a soulfulness (? I can't find the right word, so that's what I'm going with) to her that reminded me of my mom and her sisters, which I never saw in a mom performance prior. I think it was the start of me really appreciating the craft of acting. I also saw Little Miss Sunshine around the same time and seeing those two extremely different but equally authentic mom performances from her made me a lifelong fan. ...oh wait, this was supposed to be about Night. Yeah I don't think his other films are any good from what I've seen, but The Happening is an absolute comedic masterpiece.

I think I like Sixth Sense way more than most people. I think it’s a brilliant movie. The car scene with Osment and Toni Collette is so powerful

Personally, I was always more of an M. DAY fan myself.

Unbreakable. Though he’s always been a wooden, stilted writer (especially when it comes to dialogue), Shyamalan was at the peak of his directorial powers when he made this film. He expertly lays out an intriguing mystery while overlaying the proceedings with an aura of hauntingly melancholic hushed solemnity. Bruce Willis does some of his best understated work as a security guard who sets out to discover why he’s the sole survivor of a horrific train crash, and Samuel L. Jackson gives one of his finest performances as someone who may have the answer. I may be spoiling a film that’s nearly a quarter of a century old, but to me, Shyamalan has created one of the best superhero movies ever. Far more than other more overt comic book films, Shyamalan gets at the primal wonder of superheroes, enshrouding the fantastical within the ordinary and the ordinary within the fantastical. It’s superheroism by way of Stephen King.

My favorite is Unbreakable. Love the comic book character style backstory. The Sixth Sense is a close second. Bruce Willis was great in both.

The Sixth Sense. Turns out nothing is scarier than giving Toni Collette children

Drew Perkins

Yes. Absolutely. In my opinion, probably his best movie.

Signs has always been an important one for me. It’s in my Letterboxd top four if that means anything. It was one of the films that first sparked my interest in the actual process of filmmaking. I dived into those dvd extras with as much enthusiasm as the actual film when I was a kid. Works wonderfully as both an emotional family drama and a suspenseful thriller. The filmmaking craft is impeccable, the score is still one of my all time faves, and has real moments of anxiety inducing terror. I think on a technical level, it’s a perfect movie. People who criticize it for perceived plot holes I think are looking at the movie from a very wooden perspective that doesn’t allow their own imagination to fill in certain blanks or catch on to certain clues and explanations laid out in the script.

Donoharm

My favorite is Signs. I love everything about that movie. The characters, the music, the story. It's a great film about regaining faith. I'm not religious but I still appreciate a story like that.

Cameron Q Nelson

Easily The Sixth Sense although I haven't seen it since I was a teenager but I'll never forget the impact of the twist ending.
