July Movies

July is definitely not looking anything like July 2023 was for movies. But as I've said before...Barbenheimer never felt like a solution to a huge problem in Hollywood. It was more a temporary band-aid. What films are you looking forward to this month?

Maxine: big Ti West fan and love Mia Goth. Kinds of Kindness for the cast in general and Margaret Qualley in particular. Longlegs

Deadpool & Wolverine is the only thing that might lure me to the cinema. I might catch these once they come to streaming: MaXXXine, Twisters, Longlegs. If I had Apple TV (which I prob never will) I would also watch: Fly Me to the Moon.

MaXXXine

Shane Palamara

Longlegs and MaXXXine starring the psychotic scream queen to rule them all, Mia Goth. Curious about twisters, since I was obsessed as a kid. But you know how remakes usually go…

No, there's no Barbenheimer this year, and people are going back to declaring movie theaters a dying entity. But there are a few movies that I'm interested in. Beverly Hill Cop: Axel F--Okay, so I don't have high expectations for this one. Talking donkeys aside, Eddie Murphy hasn't really been funny for a quarter of a century (which I why I've always felt he should've taken more steps to reinventing himself as a dramatic actor other than Dreamgirls and Dolemite). But this for me will be a pure nostalgia trip. It'll be nice to see him and Judge Reinhold and Paul Reiser back together again. Besides, it can't be worse than the shitty third one. Kill--This one seems intriguing. I've seen trailers for it and it comes off as an Indian John Wick (or rather, a second iteration after Dev Patel's Monkey Man). I like a good fight movie, and this one looks especially gnarly with the blood and carnage. MaXXXine--Yeah, I need to see the previous two in the trilogy before I see this one. I'm just marking it on my to-do list. Skywalkers: A Love Story--I've heard about this one playing at festivals. It's a documentary about a couple who are those kinds of daredevils who scale huge skyscrapers and perform stunts for their social media fans. I've always been fascinated by people like that and this doc also serves as a chronicle of their complicated relationship. It'll be on Netflix on July 10. Longlegs--We've all seen the awesomely vague and sinister marketing campaign for this one. It hooks you right into wanting to see it. I'm holding onto my reservations that it won't nearly be as good as it promises to be, but that doesn't mean I'm not psyched to see Nicolas Cage play the villainous psycho. He doesn't play villains all that often, which I've come to see as a canny choice on his part. It's a type of role that he could have easily coasted on, with diminishing returns. But he looks flat-out spooky for this movie, and judging by early reviews, he most certainly is. Twisters--Truth be told, I wasn't that big a fan of the original. I always liked it, but didn't love it. I don't mind a sequel being made to it. It's not like Hollywood's run tornadoes into the ground. Plus I like the two leads, Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Deadpool & Wolverine--Of course I'll go see it. It's the coupling everyone's wanted to see since the first Deadpool came out. Ryan Reynolds, shrewd producer that he is, knew he needed Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to bounce off of and reinvigorate his franchise. Otherwise, I find it likely that his psycho chatterbox routine would've wore thin (I'm in the minority on this, but I found that to be the case towards the end of Deadpool 2). I think they'll make a good duo, and it'll be fun to see Deadpool wreak havoc on the MCU. These days, some of it needs to be torn down.

Longlegs looks scary as hell and the marketing is cool as fuck. I think it’ll make a decent profit. Also, I’m not sure how Twisters will do ticket-wise, but it looks like it captures the spirit of the original, so I’m really looking forward to it.

Deadpool & Wolverine is going to be a massive hit, I believe. Definitely looking forward to that.
