Kendrick vs Drake

Alright...everyone has weighed in on this so it's not like I can offer anything different. I have many opinions on both, since I'm a big hip-hop fan. But I'll just say this: any of the boomer hip hop artists from the past whining about these two being too mean to each other in the beef, need to check themselves. As if they didn't do the exact same things in their own respective day. Rap is an experience and a culture represented by survival and anger as a fundamental core. Hip-hop is not dead, it has been revived through this beef. Drake has always been the Taylor Swift of rap. Not a fan, but I vibe with a couple songs admittedly. Kendrick however, I've been a massive fan of in the past, yet critical of his artistic journey within the last 10 years. Drake attempting to beef with Kendrick was the dumbest thing he could've done. Perhaps dumber than when MGK beefed with Eminem. He may as well have just called out Bob Dylan, lol. But the point I am wanting to make is more about Kendrick. Ironically this beef has brought out a fire in Kendrick that I have not seen in a very long time. To Pimp A Butterfly was his last great conceptual work. I don't love it as much as good kid, m.A.A.d. city, but I still recognize it as a great work. But yeah...everything beyond that has felt too self-serious. Reminds me of Scorsese...where he became "culturally important" and aware of that power. And here...this is real anger, real fire, real emotion, not as artistically manufactured. I am loving it, I gotta tell you. Kendrick's diss tracks will likely be the hits of the summer, which is hilarious. We needed this. But...that's just my opinion. What do ya'll think?

They’re prob friends in real life

Shane Palamara

Even if nothing either side is saying is true - I think this beef certainly proved that Kendrick is an artist leagues above Drake. I am curious about how this all ends. Just out of curiosity do you have a GOAT rapper?

Dan

Drake is the modern day MC Hammer. He's safe, his music isn't a threat (to the machine), and he's commercial friendly. And theres nothing wrong with that. His jack of all trades approach to Black music is at times contrived but mostly lucrative. While Drake may have been a listeners first introduction to R&B, Hip Hop, Afro Pop, Grime, Caribbean music, etc. I hope he's not their final stop and that they dive deeper into these genres to discover the real art. With that being said, Drake was out of his depth. His ego got the best of him and he conflated being the most popular hip hop artist with being the best hip hop artist much like Jay Z and Ja Rule did before him. Kendrick Lamar is a once in a generation talent (see ADHD, Reagan Era, from Section .80 for proof) . He's the kind of artist where everyone can have a different favorite album from his catalog (mine is DAMN.) and no one is wrong. His last project missed the mark for me. In my opinion he was reaching for something to talk about. Lucky for him (and us) Drake gave him something to talk about. And boy did he talk about it 🤣 Maybe we can finally get that Black Hippy Album after this. Hip Hop was born from battle. Rapping, Dancing, Tagging, DJing, were non violent alternatives to representing the home team (your block, neighborhood, city etc). I love that this happened. And I honestly hope Drake evolves from this. I can't point to 1 song from Drake that represents Canada, it's culture, or that defines it's sound. Time for Drake to reevaluate and start prioritizing the ART!

j cole and drake called it a big 3 but at the expense of kendrick being the lesser of the 3. kendrick replied saying there is no big 3 just him. now only time will tell but kendrick is making them not look bad

Feels dismissive to say imo. I don't think it's cringe at all. But then again, I watch mma. I enjoy the art of war. But also, anger is anger, and this clearly is having a massive creative impact on Kendrick, whether he realizes it or not. To me it's how you handle it that determines your maturity. Kendrick has an insight, a wise perspective, but also a flawed one. And that vulnerability is part of what makes him so interesting. I couldn't disagree more.

Deepfocuslens

Yes, Kendrick was clout chasing to begin with....I blame Katt Williams

Michael Smith

Also, these are not light jabs ... kendrick called drake a pedophile ..... I don't want to listen to this shit....on both sides, it's not that serious

Michael Smith

I agree we're too old for this shit.

Michael Smith

I hated good kid maad city when it first came out....why? His previous effort (section 80 -- love this album btw) had a more jazzy sound that I thought was more natural for kendrick (more in his wheelhouse). When I first heard swimming pools I was like "wtf is this trap, radio friendly crap?". I heard bits and pieces of the album....I'll go to the grave saying backseat freestyle is one of the worst beats I've ever heard, and poetic justice (featuring drake funny enough) is just boring and low energy. Sing about me/dying of thirst is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. I never listened to the whole album straight through (the bonus tracks water it down btw) until years later and then I finally could stand up and admit to everyone "I was wrong" it's a great album and a classic..... ALL THAT BEING SAID... I know everyone has their preferences but in no way does good kid maad city even come close to to pimp a butterfly.....butterfly dominates everything in kendrick's catalog by a mile and it's not even close.....I cringe whenever anyone (oh, and a lot of people do) says otherwise. I haven't heard that level of creativity in rap music for ages (I'm talking about musically, not about pro-black stuff or any other gimmick)....people say gkmc brought the boom bap back ..... people forget that butterfly slapped harder than a mother fucker (blacker the berry, hood politics, alright). People hated on "i" so much .... I've cried so much to that song (so visceral and powerful for me). I can go on forever but enough about butterfly. DAMN tried to be a knock off gkmc and I disliked it for that (at least gkmc had a great story). I mean no album with rihanna deserves a pulitzer. I haven't really listened to mr morale....I felt like he tried to recreate butterfly with no quality control, and some radio singles. Butterfly didn't even try to make radio singles and there were no filler tracks. Anyway kendrick is amazing without trying to beef with everyone.

Michael Smith

I don't like the beef.....Kendrick was clout chasing with the initial shot in the spirit of Katt Williams....just make good music bruh

Michael Smith

I agree that Kendrick won but I missed the part where Drake started the beef with him. ‘Like That’s’ verse from Kendrick seemed like a surprise attack. I believe it caught J Cole off guard also. Although they’re the big 3 of this generation much like Nas, Jay-z and Biggie were of theirs…. And Rakim, Big Daddy Kane and Kool G Rap before that.

Jmas85

Which "boomer hip hop artists" are you referring to?

Patrick Aris

I know I needed this. I love what it’s done for the music industry overall and as a fan, I love that it made Kendrick drop more. I sing Metro’s BBL Drizzy beat to myself every day when I’m just walking or cooking or working. And it’s kinda crazy that Not Like Us has taken off the way it has. Especially out here in the West Coast. People in LA AND the Bay are dancing to it. I saw a DJ mix Not Like Us with 2pac’s Hit ‘Em Up and it just made me so so so happy.

Jared Angcanan

Not much of a debate imo. I’m seeing so many ex-Drake fans acting like they never cared too much about his music, love to see it

Mees

I loved Mr. Morales more than most. It felt like Kendrick wanted to shed the whole “Woke Prophet” label people kept bestowing on him. And I agree with you about hip hop’s history of beef but I can also understand people saying “Pac and Biggie were in their early 20s and these guys are pushing 40, it’s cringe.” Reminds me of Matty Healy talking about the Gallagher brothers “I can understand dressing like you’re in your 20s when you’re in your 50s but ACTING like you’re in your 20s when you’re in your 50s” 😅

Dan

If this feud happened a couple years ago I’d probably be enjoying it more. The protest song by Macklemore is more important to me (even though I definitely prefer Kendrick as a rapper over Macklemore)

Henri J. Mertens

but also totally agree with who knew drake would draw out the best kendrick in years. that’s a lot of fury for a little man . kinda made me sad for drake and I hate drake. he’s literally everything wrong with music today

Herbert Baker

can’t totally disagree, but i think mr. morales is supposed to be dry because he wants to script down all of the excess to force you to think about the lyrics more that works for someone like lauren hill but i feel like he’s holding something back. the beef has definitely made me want to relisten to it again

Herbert Baker

Yeah for sure, I hope that it's a lesson more than it is a humiliation. Mr. Morales is alright. I don't dislike it. But I agree that the fire isn't there in the same way. I struggle with DAMN, I won't lie. Certain songs on there I love, but overall I think it's a spotty mess. And I feel it's one of those things where after TPAB, he couldn't possibly live up to that hype of that one.

Deepfocuslens

it’s not drakes fault. it’s really not his skill set. i don’t even consider him taylor swift of rap because even she’s a little bit more layered in her work(not saying i’m a fan😝) i considered him a $1 store fresh prince.

Herbert Baker

i can not agree with you more. can not find one thing in analysis to disagree with. however I only listen to mr. morales 3 times. i did not hate it but didn’t feel the passion. i love damn till death. top 50 album for me. however, i will give drake one pass. i hope the beef helps him fro and reflect as an artist and person. and we’re all lucky they beef again 5 to 10 years from now based on who they are then.

Herbert Baker

Is it even a question? lol

Deepfocuslens

kendrick all day every day
