THE TRIAL for Criterion

It's finally coming to Criterion. And now I suppose is my official excuse to review this one. People have asked me for years. It's a movie I've always felt was messy but also super underrated for Welles. I'm very excited about this. Have you guys seen it, and if so, what are your opinions? (side note: I'm really not crazy about the cover art here. What do ya'll think?)

I usually like the cover art by this artist, but yeah, I think this one is a bit over the top

I dig the cover art! Never even heard of this film, but I look forward to your review! You always have me curious to watch dome of these classics I may have never seen.

Oh man....won't lie...I would love your opinion on The Trial. It's a film I've seen many times but, not in a hot minute admittedly. But I've always really loved it. And if it had come fully together, I think it could've been a complete masterpiece. But I feel that way about a lot of Welles. And yes...I agree with you on the cover fully. I get the anti-design aesthetic and all but, it's not coming together as a strong concept here. And yes, I love so many of those criterion covers. I feel like the cover art isn't as strong as it used to be overall for criterion these days.

very cool, never seen it, but yeah i’m not a fan of most of the criterion cover art

I've gotta see this one again. I saw it on TCM once back in college years ago and didn't care for it. I hadn't fully developed as a cinephile yet so I gotta give it another chance.

I have not seen it, but I recently rewatched Touch of Evil on Criterion. It’s everything I remember and love it for being: this captivatingly surreal, baroque noir wonderland of sleaze and grotesquerie, with Welles himself playing the film’s most interesting element: Hank Quinlan, one of his most indelibly rotten characters alongside Harry Lime. As I was watching it, I remembered that he also directed The Trial and thought how ideal he would be to do Kafka, given what he was doing in this one. But I’ve always heard that The Trial is his most divisive film. You either love it or hate it. So I’m curious to know where I would stand. As for the cover art, I can’t say I’m much of a fan. They’re trying to suggest a surreal topsy-turviness to the movie, but it just comes off as too busy and convoluted. I prefer simpler covers that can boil down the essence of a movie to one evocative, iconic image, like what they did for The Game, Videodrome, Crash, A Night to Remember, Dr. Strangelove, Lord of the Flies, Repo Man, and Persona. I thought of you when I saw the announcement. I’ve only seen it once and like it quite a bit but agree it’s a little messy. I plan on buying it to add it to my Welles collection. I recently got their edition of the Magnificent Ambersons not too long ago.
