Perhaps each brood is slightly unique in that some infected will primarily focus on milk production while others may focus on their growth. The idea being that if by some chance one infected doesn't produce enough milk for their offspring, then there is a secondary infected that focused on milk production that overproduction to feed multiple broods. So vanessa might be infected with a variant focusing on milk while Christine is infected with a variant focused on growth.
