HeraBrick / BossToys - MidFig Sandman (and variants)

What a unique custom minifigure, if that's the correct way to call it…? Perhaps I should take a step back and say it’s more of a midfig that just so happened to include a custom minifigure? And of course some color variants tailing them?

Sorry, I’m getting ahead of myself!

HeraBrick / BossToys (who may or may not be the same person?) did a fabulous job here! It’s just a shame that their main reseller (BabyBrick) has become so difficult to work with regarding shipping products. These three (technically four) figs arrived to me in late January 2025 and I’ve been jonesing to shoot something with him for months now!

So here we are! My first ever Hera/Boss product!

I’m gonna start off with the main minifig, before moving on to the MidFigs...

Some would say it's an overdesigned custom fig. But to me, I like it! Outside of the overly textured hair, this is pretty solid!

Personally, the design work is top notch! The overall line thickness for musculature vs sandy details is good! Plus, get a load of that 360° printwork around the entire fig! Just great stuff all around! Even the facial designs are great!

The hair (like all the rest of the custom elements) is well produced and clean!

But if you’re like me and don’t care for the hair, a swap also doesn't ruin the fig thankfully!

Now to keep me from blabbing on and on about it, I’ll compare it to some other dusty fellows! From L-R we’ve got and Offical Lego fig, a Firestar Custom, and our titular Hera/Boss fig…

Up until now, FirestarCustoms UV Printed fig was the best I had to work with. And ya know it’s still not a terrible fig! But certainly a different designer's interpretation! Comparing these three, it’s just a matter of taste one which you like more (unless it’s the official Lego fig, because that’s the wrong answer)

Seeing how detailed you can take a minifig is what I find the most intriguing about the lineup! 😂

But that’s not why we’re here! Let’s get to the meat and potatoes of the set! Because this MidFig is great! It’s got some very interesting and well sculpted custom elements that can be interchanged and posed just as easily as a traditional minifigure!

There’s hardly any posing limitations for one thing! Although I’m not sure why you would pose this fella’s legs like this, on account that they aren’t designed to pose like this and it looks real goofy. But the fact that you CAN is great! :)

It's also worth mentioning that those “boot” elements are very easy to get on and off of the fig, which I’m happily thankful for!

Mostly because you can switch them out for different figs entirely and get your sandy figs to look something like Jin’s Rami Sandman (albeit a bit larger). These interchangeable limb elements are versatile in a lot of ways!

Now getting to the middle of the MidFig... I’ve heard a bit of discourse about the head's design with the “sunken” face concept. Ya know, instead of having a flat Lego face.

I can see how that can be a turn off for folks. Frankly it doesn't bug me much. But it still could have been neat to have gotten a neck peg so you could swap between this sunken-face design, and the included printed heads!

...but then of course that opens a can of worms where the scaling of the torso would have to be resized so a minifig head wouldn’t look as small aaaand yeah... idk where I was going with this.

That being said, all these custom elements are all very well made! Smooth to the touch, and color matched extremely well to tan Lego ABS Plastic (if not slightly more yellow in certain light)!

This torso element alone is what brings it all together quite literally! Unfortunately the joint sockets points are just slightly larger than traditional Lego studs/technic beams, so the only stuff you can attach to him is what was sent in the clamshell.

And finally, the minifig parts underneath it all are indeed printed... just a little! Enough to keep the visual flow of the custom parts!

Then of course… we gotta talk about the color chase variants! Super Soaker Wet Water Walter, and Fiery Friendly Super Spicy Sam here are both great color chase variants to have produced!

As you can see by Hera/Boss’s box art, these are intended to be the holographic MCU “Elementals” that Mysterio conjures up in the FFH movie. They’re not given names, but at least one of them fits the bill for being a fig-barfed Hydro Man down the line 😈

That being said, I’m very impressed with the plastic quality here! To a point where these may have been injection molded when compared to the far more common micro gauge 3D printed custom parts we’re all so used to seeing! Given just how nice and transparently clear these two are, I want to believe their elements were injection molded, but I couldn’t find any injection pip points to prove the theory.

There isn’t a whole lot to say about them. They are color-chase variants after all! It’s a shame they don’t also include the hammer and spiky hands to swap between, but again… Chase Variants! I wouldn’t have expected the full kit and kaboodle, but I certainl want them!

All in all, the production work from H&B is anything but poor! HeraBrick/BossToys even went as far as to give us exclusively designed elements for the trans-orange version. Including little bits of tendril-like fire coming up and out! (very cool!)

The trans-orange variant is probably the weakest of the three (design wise) due to the fact that the “Magma Elemental” was quite literally a lava monster with a skull for a face.

This MidFig could have used some black rocky splotches printed all over it to give this guy the proper look. Again I appreciate the exclusive arms, but the overall big picture feels more like “Orange Jello Monster”, and less “Hot Magma Elemental"

Now supposedly there was also a Dark Tan color chase variant that was produced out there somewhere as well, but I don’t remember seeing it listed for sale (otherwise we’d be talking about it here as well!) Honestly I couldn’t even find photos to back this up! So maybe I really am going crazy after all these years!

But do you guys want to know the craziest thing about these MidFigs? They only cost me $60 each! Insane, right?! That’s an amazing price for the amount of stuff we got here! It’s no doubt because of how minimal the printwork is for a majority of the parts! But wow! That’s a lot of custom minifigure mass for just $180 total!

HeraBrick & BossToys already have a newer Rami Spider-Movie Sandman minifig they recently listed for preorder, but I’m worried at how long that might take to arrive to me… if ever… if BabyBrick cooperates…

So for now! This is the best we’ve got! And honestly, it ain’t too bad! 😉
