Greetings Patrons,
Sometimes in the process of noodling around you stumble across something that makes you say, 'there's something here, but I don't know what it is yet'. This is exactly what happened when I created a synth patch that made me blurt out: "John Carpenter!".
As any sane and right minded individual knows, the man is a treasure. Not just as a writer/directory, but as a composer/synthesist as well. My track "Outpost 31" was a studied and shameless homage to him (as well as to 'The Thing'). But this sound wasn't aping (oof, sorry) him directly it was more John Carpenter-esque. As in, it's something he might approve of, but didn't necessarily do.
The point is, I ran with it. Instead of doubling down on the whole JC aesthetic, I just continued to write and see where it took me. Well - turns out it didn't take me too far away from the JC vibe I had started with!
Primate Lab is a classic sci-fi trope that works with vintage/modern/future stories. It's got creepy white disinfected surfaces, metal cages and horrible lighting. And, probably people wearing weird blue shoe coverings.
Why are screeching monkeys such a great way of foreshadowing events that main story characters aren't aware of yet? (*spoiler alert: They're a lot like us)
The ambience is various lab background sounds combined with the gentle hum of my refrigerator and the buzz of fluorescent lighting. Animal sounds and various metallic clangs make up most of the foreground activity.
As this is in Patreon sneak-peek mode, I've included the mixed-version (live on the site next week), as well as ambience-only, and music-only versions here for patrons. Additionally, I created 2 'no primate' versions for the all important scene when character 1 turns to character 2 and says: "where are all the monkeys?" I hope you find these useful additions.
Thank you all, as always, for your continuing support.
Best,
Tim
