Greetings Patrons,
I was noodling around on the piano this week and this little melody came up that reminded me of a solitary figure looking out over the ocean from a rocky cliff. In my 'head movie', it was night, the sky was ominous, but it wasn't gloomy. It was more Jane Austen than Bram Stoker.
I developed the idea further - way too far actually - which removed all the cool vibes the early iterations had. I still do this a lot, unfortunately, but at least now I notice it when it's happening. Not every piece has to have every idea! Anyway, I started stripping away all the extraneous stuff until I was happy with the result.
The ambience is, of course, a rocky clifftop. I worked out a balance between wind and waves and rocks that would give the impression of height from the perspective of the character. I did two versions, actually: One was the original first-person sound design idea, the other is from a further distance. That one is more like a second observer, looking at the main character.
Musically, as I mentioned before, it's been stripped back to the original moody felt piano and a few synths. As I love blurring the lines between music and sound, there's a synth patch that sounds a bit like alien seagulls. That stayed in of course!
As this is in sneak-peek mode for Patreon patrons, I've included the mixed-version (live on the site next week) as well as music-only, and ambience-only versions. Additionlly, I've included far-perspective versions of both the mixed and ambience-only tracks. I hope you find these useful.
Thank you all, as always, for your continuing support.
Best,
Tim
