Greetings Patrons,
Here's one of those tracks that has been kicking around on my hard drive for quite some time. As many of you know, I'm a big fan of John Carpenter, both as a composer and a director, and I wanted to do a musical nod to the score of The Thing - which was actually composed mostly by Ennio Morricone. My track is called Outpost 31, which is of course the name of the ill-fated base in the film.
As is the case with a lot of minimalist music, it's not as easy to reproduce, or mimic, as one might think. (See also: abstract art!) So much of the musicality exists between the notes, with an increased focus on timbre and feel.
I had the broad strokes version of this long before I finally decided to release it, but it never quite gelled. In fact, the way I finally finished it was by cheating. It's not nearly as minimal as the Carpenter/Morricone score. I added strings, orchestral percussion and quite a few more accent synths. A far cry from the lone Prophet 10 that did the bulk of the opening theme.
With homage style tracks however, I'm never shooting for an exact copy, I'm mostly trying to evoke a similar mood. I hope you enjoy this addition.
Thanks as always for your continuing support.
Best,
Tim
