New Ambience: Barovian Castle

While working on the previous track, Graveyard, I started thinking of it as a garden of sorts. Something that might be found outside a gloomy Gothic castle. I felt like I wanted to stay in that world for a bit and explore it further, but from a musical angle.

Taking the famous Ravenloft setting from D&D, which is in itself a version of Dracula's Transylvania, I focused on the kingdom of Barovia. I assumed that Barovian music would most likely be Roma in nature and so I started down that particular rabbit hole.

As with all musical tracks of other cultures I try to capture the spirit of the thing and don't bother too much with authenticity. I needed a theme of sorts, a kind of melody or leitmotif that might represent the man in the castle. Unfortunately, all I could hear in my head was the plaintive violin melody played by Frau Blucher in Young Frankenstein! I felt like I wanted something a little darker, something more tragic. Low strings, low voices. I played the solo violin bits myself.

I hope you enjoy this one and that it adds a bit of something extra to any games or stories you might tell with it.

Special thanks to Sofi Sorokina for letting me use her beautiful artwork!

I've included an alternate, higher bit-rate, music-only version of the track for you guys below.

I'm going to be out of town next week for my one beach holiday of the year. I'll still be in civilization (email, text, twitter etc) but I won't be at the studio.  Naturally I'll have a field recorder with me in case something cool pops up. I'm always hoping for a great thunderstorm! (Yes I'll be careful).

Thank you, as always, for your continuing support.

best,

Tim
