New SoundPad: Olde Towne

Greeting Patrons,

New SoundPad is online today! Olde Towne is an audio medieval city/village simulator. It's got everything you need for creating small hamlets to bustling walled cities. Using the new 'save scene' feature you can create multiple environments using a handful of sounds and switch between them with a click of your mouse. In a few minutes you can have a town square, a desolate street, a docks district and a market.

And yes, I threw in a dragon because..well, dragons. Don't want to fight dragons in town? Make her the town mascot. Call her Joan.

Olde Towne has 36 sounds, including 3 music tracks which makes it the largest SoundPad to date, while still keeping the total audio payload under 7MB.

Also, I'm putting the finishing touches on another 10 minute ambience that should be a great addition to your Halloween games. I should have that online early next week.

Thank you so much for your continuing support. (My new hard drives, purchased with your generous donations are arriving this week!)

Happy gaming!

best,

Tim

Thanks for all the thought you put in to this Antti. I'll certainly look over each of your suggestions. Regarding music, I agree - it's practically impossible to make a 90 second loop stay interesting over 30 minutes. For SoundPads I'm always having to manage the file-size / length / quality issue. Same for UI. My early tests had a pan control which I spent 2 weeks working on! Finally I realized that it added complexity to the interface and not all that much utility. As nobody has requested pan controls since launch I feel like I made the right call. But, I'm always revising and thinking up new ways to make the site better and I take ALL suggestions and store them in a list. I promise that I never take offense. :) By the way, I think your 'minor' change of fixing the categories to the top is a really good idea and I'll almost certainly work that into a future update.

Cool! What I had in mind... First, about those music tracks on soundpads. I hit combat music on Dark Forest, and loved it, but in many games combat encounters tend to last for half an hour, or for hours in worst case, where a short combat track starts to feel really repetitive. I wonder if sometime in future music tracks of soundpads could be replaced with full-length streaming tracks with some variance, perhaps extended versions of current ones (I really like them!)? I could imagine a few musics of soundpads also making soundpads taking much more time and bandwidth, even if the musics might not be always used? Second, I'd love to have repeat -feature of sounds that aren't on by default have delay of random amount of seconds before they are repeated, and varying the sound a bit (volume, perhaps tone/stereo/some other settings too if possible). Third, a minor change, on mobile soundpads might be more usable if sound categories would be fixed on top of screen. These are just thoughts that popped to my mind, no offense if you have different view to these matters! :) And if you need help for something related to html/js/css feel free to ask!

Glad you like it! And I welcome suggestions anywhere I am. Here is fine (I do have a lot but there's always room for more!)

This is magnificent, great work Tim! Btw I have some suggestions again :D do you prefer getting such in comments or directly (or do you have already enough for a few years)?

Antti Lusila

Thanks Christopher!

This is awesome, Tim!

Timothée, Any place I am is fine to ask things! Thank you for pointing out the problem with the dragon sound! It was referencing to an older version which I've now updated and fixed. I'm not sure what the issue with the door icon icon not displaying is. I've checked it in a few places and can't get it to not show up. Let me know if this is still an issue for you. - Tim

Hi there ! I'm not sure that this comment section is the most appropriate way to track this, but I had some troubles with this soundpad ! First of all, the sound "dragon landing" is not playing (i tried reloading the page but no luck) 2/ The icon for "Door Sm Open" is not displaying However... what an amazing soundpad !!! Next session i'm sure of using it =D I have a request (if you take ones) : in your preview video, you made some scenes that you saved, could you publish like a "demo" scene for your soundpad ? Let's say i'm playing elsewhere or whatsoever and want to quickly let my players in these amazing ambient sounds, that would be most useful ! Keep up this very very good work, cheers =)

Thanks Bill!
