The marketing campaign was very interesting, at the time as the film makers went around to colleges and universities at the time and placed missing person posters up around campuses. Also, being that it was also early days of the modern Internet, they had a website that did not really advertise the movie, but a website that was showing fake newspaper articles, police reports and interviews from people in the town and talking about the legend. Also, the IMDb page at the time listed the actors as being dead. Which I think the experience of seeing all these things then seeing the movie made it a bigger experience than you see, when just watching the movie now.
