Hello! For today's Secret Art Club, I challenged myself to draw the same comic in 3 different styles / characters. Vote for your favourite one (poll in the post below) and the winner will be the one that makes it to my social channels! The power is in your hands.
People often ask me how I decide which characters to use for each gag but I don't have a straight forward answer. Sometimes it's easy to choose a character depending on the content of the comic: lovey-dovey calls for DWB and DGF, mean AF calls for B*tchy or The Sun and not forgetting Pants, the king of simp comics. But there are also loads of other things that I take into consideration! I've analysed my three attempts below.
Disclaimer: All of this depends on your goals as an artist. I make comics to be understood and to make people laugh. So, communicating my thoughts / feeling / joke as effectively as possible is at the top of my priorities.
DWB - I don't think 2 panels works as well for this gag as 3 panels. There's not enough "time" between the two blocks of text to indicate the start of a secondary-emotion inner monologue. A thought bubble might have been a better choice here rather than a speech bubble. I think in the other two options the expressions are more true to the emotion I'm trying to convey.
The Sun - I think this might be my personal favourite. I think three panels has exquisite comedy timing that other panel arrangements can never capture. The sun's sneaky face captures the joke well. The sun is also probably the sneakiest / two-faced / gemini energy character I have. Mustard and purple together scratches my brain just right.
Pink Rabbits - I like the expressions in this one. I've been meaning to bring this one-page format into my work a little more. I think it communicates the joke the fastest because its all there in front of you without need to scroll / swipe through or even capture the audience's interest enough to swipe through. Big title = eye catching (graphic design is my passion) Pink rabbits is my more sketchy, laid-back, arty style which i think appeals to artists? But I have to remember my audience is not just artists and I think the wider audience are more interested in a kind of clean lines "brand" look from me. Even though I am an artist and not a brand lmao. Also, I've been working in this style for a few weeks and i sorely miss my rainbow palette (which i was actually sick of before... DAMN MAKE YOUR MIND UP GEMINI)
I'd also love to hear your analysis and comments on what you think works and what doesn't! Because after all you are the audience I am trying to effictively communicate with !!
You are invited to ASK ME ANYTHING in the comments as always! Secret Art Club time !!!
