Love the lineup! And yes, this is a classic for my/our generation. So many famous quotes and memes from it: "On Wednesdays we wear pink", "If you’re from Africa, why are you white?", "You can’t sit with us!", "She doesn’t even go here!", "That’s so fetch", "Stop trying to make fetch happen! It’s not going to happen!", "You go, Glen Coco!", "The limit does not exist", "She doesn’t even go here!, "Raise your hand if you have ever been personally victimised by Regina George", "Why are you so obsessed with me?", "I’m not like a regular mom, I’m a cool mom", "Get in loser, we’re going shopping" and many more. Fans have also officially declared October 3rd as "National Mean Girls Day". I thoroughly enjoyed the movie adaption of the musical so I definitely recommend it 👌🏻 And yes to Jake watching all High School Musical movies! Fun facts: The movie is based on the book Queen Bees and Wannabes by Rosalind Wiseman, a non-fiction parental self-help guide. It was originally going to be called Homeschooled. Many of Tina Fey's racier jokes from her original screenplay were cut in order to secure a PG-13 rating. The scene in which Cady walks in on Jason and Gretchen kissing at her party is much different. Originally, she walks in on Gretchen performing oral sex on Jason (no nudity and nothing graphic). Also, in the scene where Cady is asked if her "muffin was buttered", the line was originally going to be "Is your cherry popped?" And the line with the girl who "made out with a hot dog" was going to be "masturbated with a hot dog". Originally, there was a problem for the "wide-set vagina" joke, but the director argued that the movie Anchorman had a similar dialogue and still received a PG-13 rating. Tina Fey also invented the slang term "fetch" (short for "fetching"). She didn't want to use an expression teenagers actually use because she didn't want it to become outdated later. The character Ms. Norbury is named after a German teacher at the school she attended, Cady is named after her college roomate, Damian is named after her high school friend & TV Guide writer Damian Holbrook and Glen Coco is also a good friend of hers. Originally, Lindsay Lohan wanted to play Regina and Rachel McAdams wanted to play Cady. Blake Lively auditioned for the role of Karen. This was Amanda Seyfried's first movie role. She initially tested for Regina but producer Lorne Michaels thought she would be better as the "dumb girl". Ashley Tisdale auditioned for Gretchen. But Lacey Chabert was the first and only choice for the role. James Franco was considered for the role of Aaron. Jonathan Bennett replaced the original actor due to the original actor being fired at the last minute. Tina Fey said that she liked Jonathan because she thought he looked like Jimmy Fallon. Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Chabert have both played the role of Cosette in Les Misérables. Lacey was in the 1992-93 Broadway production and Amanda was in the 2012 movie. Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried have both starred in movies based on Nicholas Sparks novels; Rachel in The Notebook and Amanda in Dear John. Furthermore, Rachel and Amanda have both played the love interest of Channing Tatum in different movies; Amanda in Dear John and Rachel in The Vow. Tina Fey, Tim Meadows (Mr. Duvall), Amy Poehler and Ana Gasteyer (Cady's mum) have all been a part of the main cast on SNL. Although Tina Fey and Amy Poehler never have any dialogue together in the movie, they are actually good friends and have hosted the Golden Globes together 4 times. And, although they play mother and daughter, Amy Poehler is only 7 years older than Rachel McAdams. To film one of the scenes, Amy Poehler pinned a piece of cocktail wiener into her bra to encourage the chihuahua to nibble there. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler coached Rajiv Surendra on how to rap for his on-screen performance in the school's winter talent show. While filming Damian's performance at the Christmas talent show no one was present in the audience besides the actor's mum. Mr. Duvall wearing a cast in the second part of the movie was incorporated because Tim Meadows had broken his hand prior to filming. Damian's line "And I want my pink shirt back!" was improvised by Daniel Franzese. Janis is an homage to musician Janis Ian. Her song At Seventeen can be heard playing in the background when the girls are fighting at Regina's house. When Kevin asks Janis about her ethnic background she answers that she is Lebanese. This is a payoff to the joke that Regina thougt she meant lesbian, only to have her clarify at the end that she is in fact Lebanese. The term "Karen" is partially inspired by the character in this movie. Regina means "queen" in Latin, Italian and Romanian. The song Obsessed by Mariah Carey is inspired by the movie and contains Regina's famous line "Why are you so obsessed with me?". The movie Damian and Janis are watching when Cady opens the door in her Halloween costume is Friday the Thirteenth Part 2. For Christmas 2023, Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried (Karen), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen), Daniel Franzese (Damian) & Rajiv Surendra (Kevin) reprised their roles in a few Walmart commercials and Jonathan Bennett (Aaron) has a cameo in Ariana Grande's video for Thank U, Next which is inspired by the movie (and three others).
