It could be explained away with her being led astray, it’s fixable. However, the ton already sees lower class men as lesser, therefore more willing to take liberties with a woman. So if they found out Eloise was around him unchaperoned and regularly, not only would she have besmirched her reputation by associating with the lower class, her reputation of “purity” and being untouched as an unmarried woman would be gone. That’s a ruin she can’t recover from.

2025-02-11 01:52:29 +0000 UTCQuick clarification, Penelope didn’t write about Eloise and Theo, she wrote that Eloise was unchaperoned in the company of political radicals, which while bad, is not enough to ruin her or her family. It would cause a small, but manageable, scandal. The Queen’s footman saw her visiting Theo unchaperoned so if she’s not Whistledown, her visit would be quite scandalous because it looks like she’s been associating unchaperoned with someone in the lower classes in a romantic way. Penelope not only saved Eloise from the Queen thinking she’s Whistledown, she also gave her a reasonable excuse for having been in Theo’s company unchaperoned. Eloise is known to hate society, the Queen said so herself, so it would be logical that she’d associate with political radicals. Penelope’s decision is definitely controversial in the fan base, but she was genuinely trying to save her friend from complete ruin.
