The Nextlander Podcast 212: Cheaters Never Win

This week: New video games! Sword of the Sea, Is This Seat Taken?, and yes, the annual Madden check-in. In the news, PS5 price increases in the US, Halo on a PlayStation (sort of), a Gamescom wrap-up including Road Kings, WH40K: Dawn of War IV, and uh, Bubsy 4D, and lastly... maybe Hollow Knight Silksong is getting a release date. Or maybe it's just out now?

Re: The "Konami is really ascendant" comment: I think it's important to note that the new Konami _hasn't actually made anything yet._ Konami's involvement has so far been limited to signing development deals to get checks; prior to the MGS remake, nothing indicated that they wouldn't have been happy to publish pachinko-level no-effort projects for all eternity if it brought them money. So far, it's the individual _development studios_ who've been ascendant here, due to the respect they've brought to the franchises they've revived. If you like the Silent Hill 2 remake, that's due to the efforts of Bloober Team (and, of course, the groundbreaking work from Team Silent). The Vampire Survivors Castlevania campaign? That's Poncle. The upcoming Silent Hill f is Ryukishi and NeoBards. Even, say, well-received side stuff—the Dead by Daylight or Dead Cells Castlevania DLC—is Behaviour and Motion Twin respectively. If the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 remake, which Konami is supposedly developing in-house, is worthy, then we might have *one* thing—and even then, I'd like to know how much support studio Virtuos is "helping." I don't mean to harp on Alex, as he's far from the first to make this mistake. But regardless of how MGS3 shakes out, the "Konami did it all" revisionism is unfair—and Konami has a hell of a lot of red in its ledger with the abysmal way they for years treated the creators who made their fortune and the foundational franchises in their care.
