My truck threw a shoe.

Normally I don't film this stuff but since it was what was preventing me from filming I figured I'd get some content out of it even if I don't make it widely public. What do you think?

I don't know a whole lot about cars, but I thought this was a fairly standard setup for cars with four wheel hydraulic disk brakes. The disk brakes shouldn't be used as the parking brake because, over time, slow leaks in piston seals could cause the brakes to disengage after sitting for a while, so instead, cable actuated drum brakes in the hub of the rear disk brakes are used as the parking brake. Cars I've owned with this setup have had instructions in the owner's manual to lightly apply the parking brake while moving at slow speed every once in a while to keep the surface of the drum and shoes clean, as they otherwise never slide against each other because they're only applied after parking.

Mechanic ASMR. Love it!

I wouldn't post it wider, you will take a lot of criticism for spraying lube inside the drum plus 17 other safety things

Steve Lemon

Funny to see your comment, Cody's Lab and Primitive Technology are the two Patreon projects I support :D

Giovanni Barbera

i think my 02 rav4 has disk front & drum rear, but also a fwd if that matters

Cull2ArcaHeresy

Looks like the same setup as what's on my '08 saab, which on the rear is a disc brake that's connected to the pedal and a drum parking brake connected to the handle.

It would be useful to have the model of the vehicle if someone has the same problem, knows how to replace it following this tutorial. ✌️

Put some subtitles on it explaining each step and you've got a Primitive Technology type video. The animal noises really add to it!

Urbane Myth

Looks like you hand done this before.

When I saw the rotor I thought you were just going to fit new pads and call it a a day! Only thing I will say is I cringed a bit when you let the caliper drop and bounce on the hose.

Mike Hanley

you get a new truck?

The combination was very common in 70s, 80s and 90s cars. Makes sense too, since most of the braking power is required up front and drum rear brakes are cheaper and require less maintenance, yet the braking power is adequate. Rear disc brakes fail most commonly due to underutilization; things get stuck. This combination is making a comeback in VW Group EVs, where the motor braking in the rear is adequate for any common braking, and the rear brakes will get little other use than as failsafe emergency brakes. The all disc brake setups became common since late 80s first in performance models, then the rest too with some exceptions since the 2000s. It also made cars more expensive and brake service more frequent and expensive.

Love it. 🙂

Any Cody content is good content (otherwise, why would I be a patreon) I actually have never seen a vehicle with both disc and drum brakes before... I didn't even know that was a thing. Always nice to see "a day in the life of" that isn't made up nonsense

Daniel Crusoe

I liked this. Right now my life is busy and I've struggled to keep in touch with old buddies. I've been watching your videos for 10 years, so watching this gave me that sense of old friendship camaraderie that I've been missing. Every video is appreciated! Thanks, Cody!

David Bittner

Any content is appreciated, I don’t have regular tv, and the big streaming services have nothing I want to watch.

Fixing your starship

Wow, I hadn't seen a rotor that worn before. Good thing you fixed those stuck pins. I think vids like this do two things: 1. it helps people understand there is a lot more hard behind the scenes work than they might realize, and 2. its also educational and can help people realize that this work is not as intimidating as it seems. At the very least, even if they don't do the work themselves, they will be more educated and can ask questions of the folks doing the work. You got the job done with a handful of basic tools in a dusty driveway. You don't need a fully equipped shop and millions in SnapOn to get basic work like this done! Good work Cody!

Peter Sloan

Personally I really enjoy seeing content like this. I think in terms of a potential future Mars base, a significant amount of time will be dedicated to equipment maintenance. So it's even on brand :D
