That's why Gildarts isn't mentioned in the Anime until after the Battle of Fairy Tail. They didn't know if Gildarts would even appear in the Anime until they needed him.

2024-08-04 19:26:56 +0000 UTCGildarts was mentioned a bunch in the manga before actually being introduced, which they cut out of the anime so the first time they ever actually name dropped him IN THE ANIME was right before he came. If I remember right, in the manga during the Battle of Fairy Tail arc when Laxus and Mystogan fight and Laxus goes "I wonder who's the strongest Fairy Tail Wizard, you or me", I'm pretty sure Mystogan replies with "Gildarts". And since Gildarts was gone on a 100 year quest for over 3 years Laxus replied with something like "the old man's never coming back". His name was dropped a couple of times way back then in the manga, sucks that they cut it out of the anime
