I honestly must thank you for the articulations on the topic, I often find myself at a lack of words so yeah.

Thank you for putting it into words that I've often struggled to articulate myself when Certain Types demand "well why is it any different from all the murder!!!" I can watch most violence in films/video games with varying levels of discomfort, sometimes it's fun such as the glory kills in Doom Eternal, most of the time it sucks to watch like the crucifixion in Outlast 2 (among other things in that game) But if you try to make me watch the suicide of Budd Dwyer I will leave the room, I don't want to see that shit, I don't actually want to see real violence. And like you said, there isn't really that level of disconnect or sensationalism to distance your brain from it when it comes to sexual violence in media, so it is in fact very different.

To add on to your rant about the differences between depictions of violence and sexual abuse at the end of your run through of the second game, enacting violence in games or watching such a scene play out in a movie will never elicit even slightly similar feelings as witnessing such acts in real life, Osiris forbid you actually have to take a life or have been on the receiving end of such an act. That weighs on you in a way that no depiction will ever be able to truly capture, no matter how viscerally disturbing it is. Depictions of violence in media will always be somewhat sanitized, no matter the medium. Creators want to retain a repeat audience for their work, which is a bit difficult to maintain if people are traumatized by said work. There is no such cooling effect for depictions of sexual abuse. The feelings of dread, the disassociation a person experiences when viewing such scenes is very real and extremely visceral, and is why these scenes must be handled with the upmost care and not used as a way to shock and titillate an audience. It's crass, it's gratuitous and is seriously harmful to everyone, whether or not the person is a survivor themelf.
