[1.19] Random Bar Encounters test report

Hey guys! Yesterday we released a short beta test of a new feature, Random Bar Encounters, to Operators+.

Feedback is positive so far, with several good suggestions and critiques.

What it is
Right now, the heroine (referred to in internal docs as “Kate”)’s work shifts are scripted. I wanted to test whether the player experience is improved by randomising the bar patrons that the she gets in a night.

How it works
A scripted sequence gets Kate to the start of her shift. Then, the beta test randomly picks one of five available customer encounters:

What Operators think
Generally it’s been well received so far! Several Operators suggested that encounters should escalate (i.e. completing one encounter can trigger follow up encounters with the same customer). I’m really pleased that people suggested it, it means they can see the potential of Kate gradually building up relationships with various patrons. I’m happy to confirm the system is set up to support this!

My thots

Okay! I’m going to let this beta test percolate around and get more feedback before I work on it any more. I have a family wedding this weekend 🥳 so I need a couple of days off now (but some enforced rest is probably a good thing for the project, nobody wants a frazzled workaholic in charge of something important).

Next work task for me is to start building the scenes from the finished 1.19 Beat Sheet into an actual storyboard. I’m hoping to make fast progress on this and will report how it’s going at the end of the week. See you then, and have a greta weekend everybody!

Any update on this?

I support the idea of having the community submit ideas for these encounters, so long as there is a standardized template for them and they are not just created, but reviewed/edited by the community and not Crush. Each should include some sort of ending that dovetails into the story in some way. My biggest concern with this idea is that it will just take more dev time away from the main story while Crush either writes or edits these bits of chrome. The main story is already being sidetracked by the side quests and I don't want to see story delays get worse.

I apologize for being a little late. I just wanted to point out that there will have to be a lot of these random encounters, and when they involve regulars, they would need to be remembered. Someone already mentioned having community contributions. That would be the best way to go.

Patternless

Any chance you can enable a devmode or something to force events? Sometimes I want to see what happens when I fail a roll for instance (so I get all your content for an update) but I just have to force reroll like 20x until I fail. I'm wondering if random encounters could end up the same way, where you miss some.

I love this entire concept and can't wait to see it implemented into the game. I also agree with your 3rd point of seeing Kate interact with one customer to the next could be very hot and include many variations. Such as a regular pawing at her as she serves him only for the next guy in line being new to the experience figure 'when in Rome...' and there are probably dozens of other ideas to be had from this. Keep up the good work!

Implementing these new encounters definitely sounds like the game has a good chance of being a lot hotter. You mentioned having these encounters added to the story to spice up her first shift. Am I correct to assume that means restarting the story from the beginning is necessary, or at least from an old save before her first shift at the HCC? Also, does adding new content to earlier points in the game mean that there could be new content thrown in throughout scenes that take place earlier than just her first shift? If so, there’s one particular scene I’d like to see made hotter. When Kate and her companion (I can’t recall his name at the moment) are exploring the Ghost Tower, although it would involve infidelity, which may or may not go against his character, it would be hot to add a sexual encounter there as well. That scene always felt so long and drawn out for it not to have a payoff at the end. Also, I believe I mentioned this before, but if the code allows for it, what are the chances more wardrobe choices can be added, even earlier in the game? I often find myself having to reuse some of the same items of clothing, because there simply are not enough choices. Anyway, that’s all for now. Let me know what you think.

As long as she uses singapore grip!

That was fun! I agree with the other posters, that this feature opens up alot of opportunities for story progression.

In addition to customizing to Kate, the encounters could also take into account her relationships with the staff. If she has befriended / flirted with the bouncer or a bargirl, they could rescue her from a "bad end." (knowing these are not main story encounters) Or if she is rivals with / has antagonized someone, they could make a situation worse, or perhaps make a difficult situation more likely. (Story explanation: they sent the rowdy customer to her, having told them she's willing to do more things)

I think you are right about Kate switching from one customer to another being hot, and I support customizing certain encounters to Kate's features. I absolutely support the notion that building up relations with regulars is going to make her first shift as a bargirl much hotter. E.g. friendlier ones can mention teasing/flirty exchanges and speak about how long they have dreamed of fucking her, dominant ones can quote Kate previously expressing denial or doubt and speak dirty talk about this being her real nature.

Novamarauder

Yes! Thought provoking idea, let me know if you're picturing something specific 🤔

Crushstation

is there a chance that a story hook could be disguised as a random encounter, or that a random encounter result in some referential flavour text in the main story line?

Smashingly Ineffective
