January '21 Exclusive: Cantrip Combinations

Hello patrons!

Happy New Year! I hope you're all having as good of a start to 2021 as you can given the circumstances.

In December the recruits, adventurers, and legends voted that for this month's exclusive they wanted to see synergies between cantrips. This was design space I'd never considered before but I hope you'll agree it's led to some interesting new concepts!

I often think this time of year about how I can approach writing and design in a new way, including revamps to the Patreon. I don't have any announcements at this time but if you want to discuss things you'd like to see on the Patreon going forward, or things you aren't a fan of, please join us on the discord or tweet at me!

Thanks as always for your ongoing support,

Benjamin

I almost wish I hadn't read this. Now I feel the urge to sit down and go over every cantrip available in my upcoming campaign and come up with 3 combo effects for each one.๐Ÿ˜… I love the idea here, and this feat pairs very well with the Warmage class from Valda's Spire of Secrets, but I also curse you for giving me ideas! I think I will set a simple limit. Combos are mutual. True Strike enhances Eldritch Blast, so therefore Eldritch Blast must enhance True Strike. Granted that means I have to make some tweaks to this list you provided, but I can always move overlapping ones to a different cantrip. Actually, maybe some sort of rough framework would work instead. Add some secondary effects to each cantrip which apply when they are combined with another cantrip. Combining the Light cantrip with a spell that targets a creature will always make the target glow. Gotta think about this for a while...

This feels like such a cool idea for a subclass. An admittedly super bloated subclass, but one that seems super cool in concept.

The Blade Ward, Resistance, & Light enhancements are my favorites, very flavorful and inventive bonuses. Light is probably the best one, with those enhancements creating a really solid image in my mind of a healer or protector radiating light to defend the dying or smite their enemies. An Artificer with a magical light-up trinket that just gradually repairs all the mundane objects in a room, a la some of the magic in the Harry Potter movies, is just fantastic. I would love to see this list expanded to include options for all the cantrips and would especially like to see enhancements that change the primary function of the cantrip. Really cool idea overall.

Love this idea in principle. The stated goal of the first paragraph to "provide much needed improvements to underperforming cantrips", seems to be at odds with the choice to include Eldritch Blast on the list of improvable cantrips. Unless you meant that the underperforming cantrips were the ones that are doing the improving. But either way, Eldritch Blast needs no help.
