the back log vol. 100 - now THATS a lotta logs

welcome to the backlog, your weekly look at the week that was and the week ahead! as we hit our 100th back log this week, i thought it would be fitting to invite a very special omnipotent and ethereal being to join me in today's back log. so please enjoy, and look out for (bracketed italics)!

HOUSEKEEPING

PREVIOUSLY ON BACK POCKET

BACK POCKET TONIGHT

Golly Gee, All Those Lies Sure Were Fun Mistah! ft. Gem

we were joined by our good judy over at GGSP, Gem (also a gem of a human being), to talk to Dragon Snacks Games' Michelle Menard about their upcoming community-focused townbuilding game (you can join their discord HERE to be part of the game's development too), open ourselves up to lies (and eldritch horrors) in Truth News Seek, and then guess the truths of the world in Trivia Deal.

BACKCHAT

this week on BACKCHAT, Adele & Ruby (i love these guys!) answer questions from Bmac & Jaya (oh i also love these guys!)!!!

MONDAY GAME NIGHT

Josh Played With Some Balls In The Pit

our sweet boy (baller) Josh really said "Ball Is Life" and dived into a wittle bit of BALL x PIT! (my favourite part is when he said 'it's ballin time' and balled all over the place)

SOCIALS

and then a little bit of a quiet week for socials (i was sick and died) (more like fully sick, amirite??.. guys.. don't leave please i'm lonely)

and that's what you missed on glee!!!

THIS WEEK ON BACK POCKET

AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO FUCKIN SCARY BRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's gonna be a SPOOKY episode of HORROR!!!!! we NEEDED a comforting presence for such a spooky episode, so it just makes sense that the world's warmest man ALEXEI TOLIOPOULOS is joining us!!!!!!!

(in spirit of spooky, my first living memory was a nightmare i had when i was three years old of my Gromit toy coming to life, and i walked into the kitchen to see him just chilling there with Wallace... as a three-year-old i promise to you this was very very terrifying and spooky)

~~~
as for BTBP,
Gus spent the weekend playing Call of the Wild: The Angler IRL Edition in the sense that he went fishing and caught a FUCKLOAD of salmon. he also sent me this picture unprompted. (but he didn't send it to me 😒)
you already know Pete has been playing Pokemon Legends: Z-A. he's the freakin' poke guy! (my favourite letter of the alphabet is J, it's a pretty neat one)
Josh has been playing BALL x PIT and also a bit of Final Sentence, because the only thing he loves more than balls is cruel, cruel punishment. (combine them both together for a fun surprise)
Will has been playing nothing, but appreciated that i still asked him. (the day William plays another video game the sun will rise in the west)
and Me? Gongaga? i've been playing Pokemon Legends: Z-A as well, but i've also been playing Yuppie Psycho for this week's episode!!! oh, and i've almost finished Lost 4 Swords on mobile, which is genuinely one of the best roguelike deckbuilders i've ever played. (roguelike deckbuilders are awesome and so is Ruby)
but enough about me!!! i want to know what someone else has been playing. i want to hear the musings of the OG back logger....
BLAIR!!!!
*taps mic* is this thing on?
*intense feedback* oh yeah that's right I don't need a microphone for this AND I can stop typing in italics. I have also rediscovered the existence of the Shift key - remind me to pass that on to Ruby later...
Oh boy oh boy wowee - ONE HUNDRED Back Logs! Ruby and I thought it would be fun for me to return for one more hurrah (I'd say final but you never truly know) to celebrate such a momentous occasion. Do you remember that the very first Back Log didn't even have that name? Absolutely crazy to think, considering how much of a slam dunk Back Log is for a title - I went back and did a quick bit of research and it was none other than the splendid Dolphin Pants themselves who was the very first to recommend it in the Discord, at 4:06pm AEST on April 28th, 2023. That's literally two and a half years ago as of today - what a delightful coincidence.
This is the moment where I write what my favourite Back Log moment was, but to be honest, I wrote so many that I genuinely wouldn't be able to remember, or whittle it down, even if I tried. But in all honesty, I think my proudest moment was handing the reigns over to Ruby earlier this year, and see her instantly give her delightfully Ruby-esque spin to it. Everytime I've read one over the past six months or so, I've giggled - laughed, even - and smiled as I get to check in on what my friends have been doing, both behind the screen and in front of it.
Because hey, that's ultimately what the Back Log is about - friendship. It's for us, a bunch of friends, to keep you, a whole massive community of friends, in the loop about the really cool things we've been doing - just as friends do whenever they catch up in that weird thing called the outside world. PAX was just a few weeks ago, and my mind wanders there as I think about all the people I got to see for the first time in a year or two (or even ever!) across the weekend. Some of those friends were made within this community, some outside and some that still came about as a flow-on effect from being a Pocketeer for so many years. But in the vast majority of these moments at PAX, I was able to pick up conversations in a heartbeat, no matter when we'd last left off. It's something I continue to love and cherish about my life, and an event like PAX really puts it into perspective how truly privileged I have been to have had the Back Pocket community (and its numerous predecessors) be such a central part of my adult life.
It gets said a lot by many different creators that they have the 'best community on the internet'; I like to think that instead of it being some kind of a competition, it's become a bit of a clichΓ© because there are, in fact, a lot of wonderful communities like ours out there. Because ultimately, it takes good people to foster good community. Good people making the content the community rallies around, and good people within that community to uplift them. It's easy to get bogged down in the nastiness of some corners on the internet, but I think it's nice to reflect on the fact every now and then that there are, believe it or not, plenty of good people out there doing exactly that. You're supporting one of those here in Back Pocket, but if I can ask one thing of you today, it's to do the same to other similar communities when you find them. Not only do they deserve your support (be it financial or otherwise), but by supporting the positivity, we can whittle away at the power of the negativity, no matter how overwhelming it might feel.
A lot has happened since I left Back Pocket earlier this year, including some unfortunate twists and turns in my own life, and yet I've said to multiple people recently that I wouldn't take back my decision if I had the chance to - handing over the reigns to Ruby has been absolutely the best thing I could've done for Back Pocket, myself and the community as a whole. You all are the best and I'm so excited to be able to sit back in my chair, read these Back Logs and enjoy it all with you all out there in the community.
OOPS this got a lot longer and more heartfelt than I thought, and I forgot that at the start, Ruby asked what I've been playing. The (somewhat unfortunate) answer in recent weeks has actually been League of Legends, as I've been riding the Worlds hype and trying to make myself feel like I can do even one cool play that the pros are doing (spoiler: I can't). But I've also been dabbling in Silksong and Hades II when I can pull myself away from the MOBA brain. And also, Magic: The Gathering. That shit has taken over my life this year, for better (mostly) but a little bit for worse (if you know, you know). In fact, if you're at CommandFest down here in Melbourne in early December and see me hanging around, make sure to come say hi - and maybe we can even sit down for a cheeky game or two.
ALRIGHT that's all for now folks, sorry not sorry for the big mushy ramble - stay hydrated, healthy, go outside, get some sun and maybe check in with a friend you haven't talked to in a while.
BACK TO YOU RUBICON PRIME
