The Duality of Nikke

It's 2:00 AM, and I'm exhausted.

I'm about 3/4's of the way through a script that reads like a combination of the Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir, and Das Kapital. This was not originally my intention. This was supposed to be the haha funny butt joke video. I wanted this to be a softer, gentler video. I think it still can be, but there is no discussing the gacha game Goddess of Victory: Nikke without bringing up heavy topics like objectification.

I haven't really hidden my feelings about hierarchical systems, and how they hurt the underprivileged in society. Nikke, I think, is an excellent springboard to explore these themes even further, but from the lens of intersectional feminism: a field that I am, admittedly, not extremely well-versed in, but still find important. You can thank Pearly for that.

I actually talk quite fondly about Nikke, though it's not all positive either.

I'm unsure how the sponsor is going to feel about this video, to be honest with you. And that's alright: I've never really cared all that much about what sponsors think. I really appreciate them, of course, and the lion's share of the charitable contributions wouldn't be possible without them. But those of you who were around for last year's State of the Moonion know that in the longer term, I'd love to go Patreon only and leave the sponsors behind.

I'm also unsure how the algorithm is going to feel about this one: it's not quite as glib and funny as the prior video. Quite the opposite is true: this is a pretty serious video. I do add a few choice jokes here and there, and the script is quite captivating... but it's also heavy. It's a heavy topic to cover. And it's one that matters to me a lot.

In truth, the feelings that I care most about here are your feelings, dear patrons. I'm curious what your thoughts are: do you prefer the lighter funnier videos? Would you prefer I stay away from heavier topics? Is it OK if I go just a toe deeper into the murky pool of politics? I hate to call it that -- I wouldn't, myself. But, it is best to be honest about it: this video is, potentially, a step in that direction.

I'd love to get your thoughts and opinions. If you aren't comfortable sharing them in public, just send me a private message on the community tab: I always love hearing from you all!

Should we start a Discord for patrons, too? Or one for the wider community? I can't promise I'd be on all the time: as some of you know from messaging me, I am a very slow responder. It's not you, I'm just endlessly overwhelmed.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and feelings on everything! And please forgive me my 2 AM ramble: I'll come up with better Patreon content than glorified blogposts for you someday!

Short answer: whatever you judge to be the appropriate mix. Long answer: I support for you to produce the in-depth, captivating analyses like the gacha drama - this is the "meat" of the channel and what I see as its core value proposition. However, widening the reach of the channel and your messages is important, and if producing occasional lighter/shorter videos boosts algorithm engagement, then that is a worthy goal. I encourage you to view the critical analysis as the core of your channel and everything else (sponsors, algo engagement, etc) as tools and mechanisms to help you continue producing that core content and pushing it to a wider audience.

I'm happy youre the type of person to second guess yourself, but dude, you had a video about the insane history of South Korean politics that most Americans know NOTHING about, and went as far as using footage of dudes throwing molotovs at cops to show how crazy shit has been. I will be forever grateful for how much I gained from that video. If you have a serious topic in your video, you absolutely should go for it. You've proven you're more than capable of approaching it.

I like serious conversations about hierarchical systems. I've never gotten the impression your takes on the world have been misguided or not based in truth. I appreciate the deep dives, the numbers, and the hard facts about the world we live in. As for discord, it could be fun but I'd worry that even among patrons that it might invite heated debate among people with conflicting views...

You brought up Nikke in the video duology surrounding Project Moon and ever since I've found this idea fascinating. Anyone else would (and often do, if my friends' comments are any indication) see the forest for the trees, seeing Nikke as the fanservicey game it is. Ultimately I watch both more heavy videos and lighter tone videos for different reasons, but both are warranted, and this one is one I'm looking forward to!
