LEGACY OF THE BLAZERS - CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

The blast ripped across the wasteland, incinerating what remained of Blowhole’s ship and causing numerous buildings to collapse. The skeleton of a skyscraper that Lux clung to shook and threatened to fall as well, but she tried to focus on only the blast. She took a deep breath and clenched her fists.

“Guys, I have no idea if this is gonna hurt or not,” she said. “Honestly, I’m not even sure it’s going to work. But, if it doesn’t, there’s no way we win this battle anyway, right? So we might as well trust ourselves and take chances.”

Both of the wolves howled in agreement and then it was there, in front of her, melting the metal beneath her feet into goop. Before she fell, she threw her fist out and sunk it into the blast. She felt nothing. No scorching pain or even the impact of her punch. The smoke, or maybe it’s better to say the wolves, absorbed it all.

The relief of seeing it go bouncing back away from her almost caused her to pass out, and when it collided with the remaining snake and blew its body to nothing she couldn’t help but pump her fists. If you would’ve seen that, Jess, I know you would’ve been damn proud.

Once the embers and ash from the blast finished raining down and the smoke fully blew away there was just her—now hanging off another part of the same skyscraper she was on before—and Blowhole, who glared at her like a playground bully would glare at a child for finally standing up to them.

“Proud of yourself?” he asked, his voice echoing through the wreckage around them. “I bet you didn’t know that you had that in you.”

“You’re goddamn right I’m proud,” she said.

Blowhole took two more long hits off his blunt and then stumbled as the snakes reformed in front of him. Was he already feeling the effects of the weed? What a lightweight. If she destroyed both snakes again, fighting him would probably be a piece of cake!

But how? That was the question of the hour. He wasn’t stupid, and she knew he’d be more cautious this time around. Even with her strength, charging in again would probably get her bit in half and if they both fired blasts at the same time, she wasn’t sure she could able to stop them. She looked down at her fists, at the wolves.

“You guys got any ideas?” she asked.

Their whimpers made it clear they didn’t.

Her thoughts were disturbed by a boom which shook the metal bar she was clasping so violently that she let go in an instant, slamming into the concrete below. She heaved herself up just in time to watch as a fiery ball consumed one of the freshly summoned snakes and caused it to thrash wildly. Then she played a dangerous game of dodging rubble, one which left her with an aching gash on her head.

A few seconds later, there was another boom, and this time she saw it—the burst of flames emanating from the top of Bon’s castle and the missile which came soaring straight toward the second snake. There was no way it could react it time, and so the missile took it away too, once again leaving behind only Lux and Blowhole…

…Who was currently stomping around like a petulant child.

“No, no, no! Outside intervention? That is goddamned cheating and pathetic even for you, girlie!”

Cheating…?

Funny that he pretends to care about integrity.

Though she couldn’t see or hear them, she knew who was helping her out—Tegan and Bon. Firing blasts directly at Blowhole ship would’ve been too risky but here and now it was the only thing giving her a clear advantage and goddammit, she wished she could tell them how goddamn awesome they were.

Or, well, Tegan at least. She assumed Bon didn't give a shit and was just doing this to screw with Blowhole.

“I never thought I’d see the day,” Lux said, sliding down a pile of rubble. “You, the great Blowhole, actually look worried. No, that’s not it—you look scared.

I’m scared of nobody!

Blowhole took another two drastic hits off of his blunt, bringing the snakes back into the battle. They didn’t even get to mount one assault before they were walloped and taken down by another round of missiles. Blowhole didn’t screech in frustration. Instead he just collapsed and heaved like he was going to vomit.

A chance!

She dove forward, fist outstretched, and knocked his other tusk loose as she sent him soaring backward. He caught himself, digging his remaining fin through the chunks of metal and stone which made up the ruined earth beneath them, and glared at her. “You’ll…never…get away…with this…”

Talking like he's the hero...?

....What an ass.

Lux didn’t let up. She met him head on an unleashed another volley of punches which he was scarcely able to dodge. Eventually, after she caught him with a knee to the gut that made his eyes bulge out of his head, he fled, trying to lose her within the mess of broken ships and buildings.

It didn’t work, though. The weed made him too slow, the panties made her too fast. Every turn he took, she was waiting for him. Every hill he climbed, she was waiting for him. That fear in his eyes? It grew with each passing second.

…Until it disappeared entirely.

“Why are you smirking all of the sudden?” Lux said. “Think you’ve got a trick up your sleeve?”

“I’ve only lived so long...because...I know how to play tricks,” he said. “Tell me...did you forget that I don’t have to make my snakes giant...? That I can summon them...and increase their size...at any time?”

“What does that matter?” She held out her hand, pointing it at him and charging up a blast of her own. “Shut up and just die.”

“I’d lower that hand...if I were you...girlie.”

A disastrous sound rang out. Not another boom, but something different. Like a statue had been tossed into a wood chipper. No, it was like teeth were chewing through metal! She raised her head and saw that one of the snakes was standing in the middle of Bon’s Castle, having ripped its head straight through it. Currently it was snacking on the outer-shell, tearing off chunks of roofing as it searched for Tegan and Bon.

While she was distracted, Blowhole had played a trick. And a damn clever one, too.

He had summoned one of the snakes and had it sneak over to the castle before activating its true power.

And now it was too close for them to destroy it with another blast...

“Fuck,” Lux said.

“Fuck...is right,” Blowhole said. “Now lower your goddamned hand...or my snake will scorch the earth beneath it with a blast...that ensures...whoever has been assisting you...is burnt to a crisp!
