Will's Play of the Week #5: I Need to L2S

Hey folks! Back in my pre-Scrabble days as a World of Warcraft player, I used to hear (and, embarrassingly probably say) the phrase "L2P" - a snobbish phrase intended to motivate someone to "learn to play" more effectively. In this video, you'll see why I need to take my own advice and "L2S": learn to better use my S tile. The play I should have made in this position should have been quite clear, but I missed it. See if you can find it yourself!

I have a theory that individual pieces of Scrabble logic aren't actually all that difficult to grasp much of the time, but having to process so many of them at once while also working so hard to even *generate* the plays to choose from is why we can miss plays like this on a regular basis.

Exactly...there are so many things to juggle in the heat of the moment. Seeing SEC (or SECT) is one thing, but looking into the mess of the unseen tiles and drawing the most impactful conclusion (lack of S's and T's) is another.

I quickly came to the right idea for what to focus on, but then completely failed to spot the right move, lmao. It's good to see that my strategy instincts are right, but I gotta work on that board vision.

Wow quite happy I found the idea. Great puzzle for my level as someone else also said.

This was an excellent puzzle for my level. I paused the video and I did find the play, but this is the sort of play that I would normally miss. At my level, though, I wasn't sure how many hooks there were. I looked it up and evidently there are four hooks in Collins.

adorable kitty!!!

I saw the spot but only saw SECT - I didn't think about playing less. I guess that's it's own lesson, is knowing when to keep the hook for a word and when to claim it right away.

"Whaaa, why am I out of mana and you're still blasting away??"
