The Art of Repair

I patched my shirt. But the art of Sashiko is more than just mending.  The intention is to actually appreciate the fabric with this style of stitching. It entails stitches placed in a geometric fashion with the use of a patch to make the fabric stronger.

Sashiko originated in Japan (as early as the 1600s). At first, it was used by the poor with materials that were readily available, out of necessity. It eventually became a way for an individual to be creative and skillful.

In the modern world, we have a tendency to replace rather than repair. Especially when it comes to clothing. While my shirt is not particularly special, I like it. It carries for me a sentimental attachment. It belonged to my father, and I hold it dear not because of who my father was, but because he was mine. It serves me as more than just a shirt. I wear it to cut the edge off of cold winter days, or as a smock, now it is also a work of art.
