A most powerful piece of music

I had forgotten about Rzewski's version of this Chilean protest song. But when I saw on Twitter today the hopeful tweet from the Bandcamp union I was reminded of it. And like the first time I heard it decades ago I am torn apart as I listen to it. The motiv laid out in the first part is deconstructed, reflected, re-assembled in seemingly endless variations, but it remains the DNA of every part. The video here allows for reading the score, which is wonderful. Especially making use of  variable speed on YT helps catch the details (at least for my brain, I have not read sheet music in a while).

I don't know how many of you here are into Modern Classical/Neue Musik, but this piece is great introduction. A personal favorite remains Variation 12, with its introduction of whistling and the piano slam.

Anyway, no more point to this than I just felt like sharing something I love.

Take care,

That sounds great!

So pretty, thanks for sharing.

The radio show is on Sunday mornings on TRUK an online station owned and run by the trans community. The show varies so you will find a mix of old classic with new more Avant Garde interspersed. The podcast is the Classical Queer podcast available on most streaming services. We interview modern composers who push the boundaries of contemporary classical music. It does have one limitation in that it is limited to those in the queer community. The episodes vary so you have everything from Musical Theater through modern opera to Avant Garde music and pretty much everything else. Not everyone's cup of tea but often challenging. Enjoy.

Where can I find the radio show and podcast?

Thanks for sharing. I love modern classical music. There are so many brilliant new composers producing cutting edge music that is sadly missed by many in the classical music world. I often push new music like this in both my radio show and podcast. Glad to see a fellow enthusiast, Sammi

This is a very common protest chant in Chicago (in Spanish “el pueblo unido jamás será vencido”.) But I didn’t even realize it was a song, let alone that this version existed. Thanks for sharing and let’s hope for the best for the Bandcamp union.
