Video Premiere: The Enchanting LoFi Textures Of An Optical Sound Sampler

Hey Ipsters,

Today, a new video on an almost forgotten instrument, the Chilton Talentmaker.

The Chilton Talentmaker is a 1970s optical sound sampler, very much like the slightly more famous Optigan. Designed as an easy device for beginners to make music and entertain at home, it found late fame through its use in Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind" in 2004.

I explore it a bit further than normal :-)

For the higher tiers, a very special sample pack and a piece of music will release once the video is out. And: I have made an EP I will release alongside this, more on this a bit later.

Love,

Hainbach

Yes, the loops are all a bit off to each other. Makes it a "feel" thing to play. And polyphony is because each groove is read by the optical ready simultaneously.

Great video. I'm very curious as to how the polyphony works, in particular on the rhythm tracks. The data is stored in concentric rings, correct? If so, are the loops of varying lengths? I tried researching the optigan but had no luck finding an answer. PS Cuphead Rules!
