First attempt at Smooth Welding

Saw something about this on Reddit last week and have to give it a try for myself.

Picked up a temp control soldering iron off Amazon for about $16

You can set it to 180/185 and it slooowly melts the filament together.

My first attempt went well. Just messing around on some test parts before i finish it off tomorrow for a new video

Oh I was saying that because it seems to be more time consuming than the typical filling / sanding & painting. But would totally be a good option to smooth & paint if you wanted. Thanks for joining as well!

I don't know if you'll see this but why did you say NOT to do this if you're going to paint them? Also I don't have my printers setup yet and I have the the liquid kind will this work for that?

I’ve been trying something similar with a cheap pen style fdm printer with meh results. This might be a better option

Is it glue together first and then "weld" into the crease/gap?

Ramble6

Oh nice, as a metal welder/Fabricator I am more scared to try and weld PLA lol.

James DiFrancesco

Yep!! I was using a bunch of the scraps and melting them into it. Def takes some practice but fairly impressed

Uncle Jessy

You might want to try to put filament upto the pieces and weld it like that almost like soldering or real welding. Could come out a little cleaner for sanding it back.

James DiFrancesco

It definitely takes practice! And hard not to melt too too much
