Raiders of the Lost Ark: historical accuracy

Wait, you mean it isn't an archaeology documentary??

My main sources for the background and making of the movie are

For Nazi interest in archaeology I used Bernard Mees, “Hitler and Germanentum,” Journal of Contemporary History 39, no. 2 (2004): 255–70, http://www.jstor.org/stable/3180724.

Raiders of the Lost Ark: historical accuracy

They were totally different from what’s in the movie- jet powered, could only fit 1 guy in there, but interesting.

Came to say this! Understandably Japan also worked on a flying wing- examples of both are in the Virginia annex of the Air and Space museum. I laughed when I saw them last year just kinda propped up against a wall in a corner.

I loved the Scrooge McDuck comics as a kid! I can definitely see the connection to Indiana Jones

I'm playing the game on Twitch starting today. https://www.twitch.tv/premodernist_history If you don't watch Twitch, I'll try to find a way to make recordings of my game available on YouTube.

Love all the indies and hearing more about the ark. Although, just wanted to mention, the Germans did indeed experiment with flying wing aircraft, albeit not like the one in raiders exactly. The Horton Ho 229 is an experimental flying wing bomber that you can still see the remains of in the Smithsonian. I'm guessing Lucas was inspired by that one.

Inspired to go back and watch all the movies again, great video thanks!

That's a really good idea

Can you do make tier video where you rank movies according to historical accuracy?

Madhav Nair

There’s a phenomenal novel named “All the light we cannot see” in which the narrative is driven largely by the Nazis searching for a lot of powerful mythical objects (and one in particular). If you haven’t read it I highly highly recommend! But just wanted to mention that’s another place I’ve seen this idea explored.

Niall Walsh

Yes! Walker is W-I-L-D

Kevin Love Hewitt

I'm actually planning on streaming it in January!

That's a good idea!

A new Indiana Jones video game came out. It’s very well done. You’d love it. I’d love to watch you play it and do a commentary. “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle”

The history of this film is more recent than premodern, but I would love to hear you do a review of one of my favorite films: Walker (1987) directed by Alexander Cox.

Warren Commission Test Skull

Loved the video, awesome holiday treat! Dr Mark Felton has a few videos on the subject of their occult interests.

Ethan Sena

Great!
