Ranking the historical significance of different crusades

My first tier list video! I rank ten different crusades based on how historically significant I think each one was.

A podcast would be a great idea!

Nour Aldein

really fun format!

It’s pretty intuitive to me given how much of the day was dark without or with only fairly limited artificial light but I also absolutely love how every single time this is brought up by historians they seem to imply the intersleep period was an or even the ideal time for sex

The fact the Khwarezmians casually sacked Jerusalem after their empire was destroyed by Genghis Khan makes the Mongols even more terrifying.

John H

I listened to most of this video as if it were a podcast!

Karl Voelker

I've heard this too but I don't know if it's true. I haven't seen it come up one way or the other in what I've read.

unrelated but do you think you could talk about medieval sleeping habits at some point? were there really two sleeps??? i always hear this but it just seems wrong😭

shoshana

"Medieaval people are like cats" should be put on a plaque ;) Loved it, love your rambly shirtsleeves style! And I'd like to hear much more about the crusades especially with the wider context considered - I had no idea the Mongols were concurrent and affecting this :)

Martin Tepper

Hearing you ramble about history is a lot more entertaining than you give it credit! The crusades podcast sounds like a great idea and I'm sure a lot of people, including me, would listen to it regardless of how narratively dramatic it is

Linas Jusevicius

The podcasts would be a good idea. No need to stay in the narrative format if that is too much work or not your style. I would absolutely listen to unstructured history of persia or the crusades

Benjamin Krugman

Why did Constantinople get the works? That's nobody's business but the Turks! 1453!

Amanda Parrish

>an hour and twenty minutes LETS FUCKING GOOOO

Faraz Masroor

Haha, what a mess the fourth one was! I genuinely laughed when you compared the crusaders to cats :D

Lukas Janecka

That's a good idea. I'll put that on the list for future months. It'd be a long video though. I'd have to keep my remarks on each one short.

People went for a variety of reasons, but many of them seem to have felt they were participating in a noble cause that made it worth it. They weren't worried about Turks invading Europe back in the 1100s and 1200s when these crusades happened that I talk about in the video, but later on they did become worried, when the Ottomans were expanding into Europe in the 1300s and 1400s. The crusades that went against the Ottomans were motivated by fear of Ottoman conquest. There's a lot of myth and sensationalism surrounding the Children's Crusade. It's possible the book you read had some inaccuracies.

Would you consider ranking the us president, just for fun

Great!!

I think it would be interesting to talk about the crusades some more, from the point of view of Europeans sending these armies off. Why did it seem worth it to them? Must have cost a huge outlay in funds, not to mention lives. Is there any way to know what the common citizen thought of all this? And how much did they worry about foreign armies invading western Europe, like the Turks? Did that play a role in deciding to send off a crusade? Or was it primarily a type of religious mania? When I was a kid I read a fictionalized account of the Children’s Crusade, a horrible and tragic disaster, just pointless.

Anna Silliman

This is a video that will change how history is taught

Reindeer

can’t emphasize enough how excited i was when i saw the video title

nina bennardo
