Severance | S2 Ep7

Well... I'm in pieces now...

This episode is such a hard left turn I didn't really know what hit me.

Enjoy.

(Best you can)

I loved this episode; it's both beautiful and heartbreaking. I can safely say it's my favorite episode, at least so far. I have to say I like Mark and Helly as a couple, but my favorite is definitely Mark and Gemma. If I had to choose, I'd rather see them together at the end of the series. :'3

This is such an emotionally resonant episode and your reaction pays it full respect in the moments that have the most emotional impact. The actress Dichen Lachman really delivered here. We all fall a little bit for Gemma - she is so lovely and compelling. I had pretty much surrendered to fully shipping Helly and Mark until I first watched this episode and from then on, things became so complicated. They go through a really tough spell, but it's clear that Mark and Gemma are still in love. My hatred for the destruction Lumon brings to the lives of people for their own cultish ends crystallized from this point on.

Robert Northrop

Okay I finally got back to watching this reaction

Geez Wheeze! *big sigh…This heartbreaking of an episode is my favorite by far. Besides the human tale story telling and superb acting, the cinematography was incredible! This episode showed shades of life: fearfulness, despair, sadness, but also hope, survival and love. Again, Claudie “eagle eye” noticed the details we missed! Thanks for always reading the tiny font we can’t read on the screen 😂

Ruby Nieto

I get you Claudie! Every time I see this episode I feel exhausted after. They showed us their highs and lows like a beautiful rollercoaster that you wish you could get off of at times!

Christina Paz

Yes! There are theories that Gemma was a plant put there by Lumon to lure Mark in. I don't believe that. But there also is speculation Lumon was actually testing peoples blood to see if they were a good match for nefarious Lumon plans and Mark and Gemma just happened to be the unfortunate couple. And because of that they staged Gemmas car crash to kidnap her and then lure Mark in to do severance afterwards. I really don't know. But one thing we do know is that Lumon was there since the beginning of their relationship, which is so ominous.

Christina Paz

I was crying like a baby by the end of this and I've seen it so many times already! I never noticed the rabbit shadowpuppet shape Gemmas hands made when she was lying in her bed on the testing floor.

Christina Paz

Nah I noticed the song and mentioned it 😊

Claudie

Huh? When talking to Reghabi in ep 6 he explains how he wishes he could go back, and do things differently. He says ‘drink less’, insinuating he was drinking heavily while Gemma was alive. We also see a glass of alcohol next to him when he’s taking down the crib don’t we? Maybe I’m wrong…

Claudie

I'm rubbing my hands together for this one, doing dishes have never been more entertaining than some good old fashioned heartbreak in a show

MAROON

Mark - Goes through the entire episode without a drink in sight Claudie - Well clearly Mark is a raging alcoholic!

Eric

SPECULATIONS AHEAD! That I missed! And it would explain so much about Cold Harbor and Gemma! I think something about the crib will be the final test for Gemma. Maybe build it or destroy it without any recollection of the events and without any "temper"!...😱🙈 Is that it? They try to create the perfect Lumon work slave? 🤔🧐 Or does this get even wilder and they try to create a vessel for Kier. To bring him back? 🙈 Can't wait to see how this all pans out...😃

Great observations as always...🙂 I thought that was a meter to "measure" emotions, too! 😅 Yes, Milchick is way up high on my shitlist too. I don't see the innies as "dead". As long as their outie is alive, they can come back at any time (in theory). For me it seems more like they fall into a coma where no one knows if or when they gonna wake up again. But from the other innies POV you are right, they are gone for good. 🙂

As always, I am a day late, and many helpful viewers have already pointed out some things to you. Luckily, I am so obsessed with Severance that I can pull the most obscure shit ever, so here's a fun one: The device used in the beginning, which you thought was measuring if Gemma was lying or not, is actually called the WoeMeter, a device used to measure the "Woe" temper. It is a parody of Scientology's E-meter, a device claimed to measure emotions. You can read this devices' inception from the creator's website: https://make3.co/work/woemeter Woe level is also mentioned in this form, which was material shared to the mod team of the Severance subreddit by the team at Apple (not confirmed canon): ( https://www.reddit.com/r/SeveranceAppleTVPlus/comments/1j14bq3/health_and_wellness_at_lumon_a_daily_reminder_to/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button ) Mark mentions "you hate writing thank-you notes" at 29:45, and later, one of Gemma's innies is put into a room solely for the purpose of writing thank-you notes. It also looks like they are making her write with her non-dominant hand? At 32:18, I think what you are asking is if she is the first severance test subject? which would be no, as iBurt had been severed for 6 years. Ms Casey being send back to the testing floor (i.e. to her death) once again by Milchick, paralleling episode 8. Personally, this cemented the moment where I won't budge feeling sympathy for him, no matter how much shit he gets from higher up. This, and him being the one to administer the break room punishment for 2+ years, to me, demonstrates an insane lack of empathy, and I really hope they don't make him into something like, 'well he actually really felt bad about that internally, so all is forgiven'. So Milchick is on the shitlist, that is, until we inevitably get a sad backstory from him as well in S3. I'm sure you know by now (as you are on further episodes), but the innies shown in the testing floor are all different. The first one says she was just at the dentist room, which shows in her existence she only knows this place, and another one says, "It's always Christmas." Anyways, that's all I got from this episode, other than gushing over the set design and the numerous items designed by Dieter Rams for Braun that fit so well into the Severance aesthetic. I think the testing floor's my favourite Lumon space by far, love the look of everything down there, especially Dr. Mauer on the floor.

This episode is so heartbreaking! It seems like Lumon has been involved in Mark and Gemma’s life for a really long time-in the beginning you can see that they sponsored the blood drive where they met! It makes me wonder if Lumon target them somehow.

Kathryn Ellis

This is such a beautiful, heartbreaking episode. I was crying by the end of this rewatch. There are still things we don’t have answers to in regards to Gemma’s accident, but I think this was such a great episode to fill in some of the blanks and as well as seeing Gemma’s personality and her & Mark’s dynamic. Luckily this is the kind of show where I can ship both Mark/Gemma and Mark/Helly because they are both so beautiful in their own ways.

Erin

The last few minutes where Mark and Gemma are both slipping into darkness and fading from each other is soooo well done.

yurintroubl

One of the best episodes of television I've ever seen. This was Jessica Lee Gangé's directorial debut after being the show's cinematographer and jesus christ did she absolutely kill it. Just binged all your reactions over the last few days, cannot wait for the run to the finale.

Steven Ashford

I think so too, because there's the scene near the end where it's Christmas in the "real world" and he has his arm around her on the couch in front of the Christmas tree. (Before she goes into the Christmas room on the testing floor).

Jennyjoy

The name of the crib is col d'arbor. You can see it on the box if you look carefully. (I didn't notice it, but had it pointed out to me) Another fun detail, at the clinic, she was writing with her right hand, when she's in the room writing the thank you notes she's using her left hand (and Mark says earlier that she hates writing thank you notes) What if you were severed and your innie only knew the dentist, that would be awful

Jennyjoy

Yeah, this episode just rips your heart out.

peteysaw

3 subtle pickups I think you missed: That song is also the song from season 1 when Mark is putting back together Gemma’s picture. In that same scene, when Mark is saying things about Gemma, he says when she sneezes she always sneezes twice. When he walked in to give her the ant farm, she sneezes twice. Finally, a throwaway line in this episode during a flashback, Mark mentions she hates writing thank you cards. She has to write thank you cards in the Christmas room.

Dustin Fraze

I too was gutted by this episode. Meeting someone for the first time who prior to this episode was just an abstraction is so impacting. And how Mark wakes up with her so fresh in his memory, tears in his eyes, really lands the ending and amplifies the stakes for this season.

Robert Northrop

Next episode kind of divides opinions. I quite liked it. I suspect you will as well, but we'll see.

Justin Odum

I did not interpret them as "growing apart" as much as you did. There was the scene with Mark being a bit of an asshole to her, but Mark seems to be like that to everyone at times. I think they were just going through a difficult time together, which meant the initial "fairytale stage" of their relationship had kind of dissipated.

Justin Odum

I can’t help but parallel gemma & helly trying to escape lumon LET THESE LADIES OUT

Trish

I love how Adam Scott gets a haircut and everyone remembers that, yeah Adam Scott is hot. They shot the past sequences on actual film, so you were right to notice it. Re: the shipping wars around this show, you're supposed to be conflicted. Both iMark/Helly and oMark/Gemma deserve happiness but the situation is fucked. The finale is an absolute banger. Looing forward to that.

Helly R

Well, this was heart wrenching. What are they doing to those poor people, especially Gemma? 😱😭🙈 As far as I can see they are testing her emotional responses to different scenarios related to her past, but for what? That Drummond asks about the severance barrier makes me think if they confront her with her past to see if her memory is truly wiped when she is severed (like confronting her with Mark, etc.). Cobelvig did something similar with Mark by stealing Gemmas candle and confronting both with it. That would explain why they need the "real" Gemma that remembers everything, so they have someone to compare her innies to. So effective and brutal to keep her in her prison by switching her personality in the elevator. That means she cannot escape without help on the severed floor. Someone would have to take Ms. Casey by her hand guiding her to the stairwell or the elevator...🤔 How did Gemma get to the testing floor? For Ms. Huang being their daughter - the timeline doesn't fit. She is what? 13? 14? The accident happened three years before and her miscarriage(s?) not long before that. They don't look like 12 or 13 years have passed. So no, I don't think they would have a 13 years old daughter...🤔 Also I noticed that Lumon is omnipresent in their past. Is it just in their memories or were they living in a Lumon-shaped world even then? Maybe Lumon was looking for someone desperate, who they could manipulate into being their guinea pig for their severance test runs? 🤔 But what is the ultimate goal here? 🧐 Seeing two Police Officers outside your door at night, taking their hats of and bow their heads is something you never ever want to see...🙈

silverarrow06

You looked away at the bit where it showed the Lumon logo on the blood drive machines! 🤪
