Severance | S2 Ep4

We're taking a field trip... a chilly one it seems.

Creepy stories...

Creepy innie doubles... and...

Someone creeping in a tent... 👀

Well well well... let's see how this plays out.

Enjoy!

I think there are hints that Helly actually had no chance of telling Irv because she wasnt Helly in season 2 up to this point at all

Tim H.

This episode was so WTF. Poor Irv. He got mad at everyone, but he was right about Helly, and no one listened. Plus, he didn't deserve that comment from Helly (I declare Irv my new favorite character and Harmony my second favorite. It hurts my heart, but Helly has fallen off her pedestal. She had the chance to tell Irv the truth and didn't. And Mark drops in the rankings too. Mark, calm down, bro). I didn't like that Mark went so far with Helly, knowing he has his mate out there. I understand he's in love, but I didn't like how blind he is. Lastly, I'd like to share my interpretation of what Kier did to his twin. I think because the twin didn't want to come back and Kier did, he ended up killing him (not a reason to kill, but we know Kier was a crazy cult leader, so I wouldn't be surprised). Update after seeing Irv expose Helena the mole. Helly returns to the top 1 and Irv is ranked second, lol (Mark is stuck with his ranking drop). Claudie, did you write this? Oh my God! How did you guess so correctly a few episodes before that Helena would pretend to be Helly?

Hello Claudie, I have enjoyed your reactions and thoughtful insights, many of which were fresh to me. I think that is what makes reactions by different creators from various cultures helpful. We each can bring different insights others might miss and build a more complete robust mosaic. Do you have an idea of where you wish to go with your patreon ? Do you have specific genre's you will or will not cover? Do you have a schedule of releases per tier planned? I am not interested in participating on Discord so it would be great if there was an option to participate in a group chat/polls here. All in all, I think that curious, excited, genuine nature you have is what makes this channel stand out so don't change that if you help it. All the best!

MWD

Yeah now it makes so much sense, cause Helena wouldn't know how to make the move, not Helly!

Claudie

Yes there's so many details in the dream sequence very very cool!

Claudie

Plus also he was being seduced, Irv had it spot on, he cant really see it cause he's making goo goo eyes at her haha! Yes so so good!

Claudie

Yes the way you see how much affection he does have for her! :(

Claudie

hehe I know right!

Claudie

I know right, can you imagine how she feels!

Claudie

Only gave this a quick read but will for sure go over all this soon, thank you!

Claudie

I've seen a couple of eps ahead, we do see Irv again technically. It will make sense soon. Yes the performance is so so good, and I still dont know if clones or not! Yeah I did wonder gematria when editng haha

Claudie

Yeah I'm working on the idea of making a compilation hahaha would be fun! Yes now it's Helena makes sense why she kept it quiet, though maybe Helly would have to for fear of them turning on her.

Claudie

Loved this Claudie!! Great Reaction as always!

I need to see a super-cut of all your reaction faces from this episode. There were so many good ones lol I wonder, now having seen the reveal, do you think Helly would've revealed who she was on the outside immediately? I fell for the trick myself while watching, but in retrospect, I feel Helly would have had no problem revealing who she was and wouldn't have made something up! Anyways, this was such a great reaction to such a great episode. Can't wait to see the next one! Also, "Yes. Do it, Seth!" is one of my favourite lines/moments of the show so far

Travonious

I got no words lol. I’m still holding my head in awe! I love Irv, hope he is not gone gone. WOW, Britt Lower, what a performance making us doubt if she is or not Helly, the subtle changes to her face expressions… Clones or holograms? I still think clones - holograms do not create shades right? And because this is the way my brain works, when I looked at the numbers you noticed repeating on the computer screen, 7514 -and like Matt Quinn mentioned it spelled out “Eagan” - if we associate the number to the letter sequence in the alphabet we can get Eagan (e.g., 1=a). Thanks!

SPOILERS FOR S2E4 Welp, no notes for today, just here to point out some of the details/hints about the reveal at the end of the episode. I wrote these notes during my initial watchthrough back when the episodes were coming out, so I may have missed some details. Can't wait for more! Ep 1 1. 'Helly' runs out of the elevator which isn't consistent with her being tackled. Also she doesn't spill everything she found out immediately to plot how they can use her identity as an Eagan to their advantage. 2. Body language and hesitating to hug Mark at their reunion when there was a high chance they would never see each other again. 3. Pointing out there were no cameras in MDR so they can speak freely. 4. Helena is zoning out during the claymation video, when this is the innies' first time seeing something like this. 5. She points out once again there's no microphones or cameras when Helly would never trust Milkshake. 6. Helena lies about her whereabouts during the OTC while describing her apartment as "very boring" even though nothing would be boring to the innies because everything they see would be new to them. 7. Night gardener comment showing her privilege. Her terrible lie is also an example of how she doesn't see innies as equals, and thinks a lie on the spot would suffice in convincing them. 8. She says "We should all go" to follow Irv when he runs off to find out what he learned. 9. Helena's walk is distinctly different than Helly's. 9. Helena's outburst at Mark's comment about how they are the same; she doesn't see innies as 'people with autonomy'. 10. She does these awkward smiles that we never seen Helly do. 11. Helena struggles to find the power button to her monitor, it is a very deliberate shot. 12. Her file name is "Santa Mira" referencing 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers'. Ep 2. 1. Helena showing a fascination and enviousness to Helly's life of "freedom" on the severed floor 2. Helena gives a look to Mr. Milchick when Drummond says how Mark won't work without Helly R. 3. The Elevator doesn't have a second chime when Helena goes down, Ep 3. 1. Helena reassures Irv by holding his arm awkwardly, like she's 2. The moment of tension where a kiss would occur doesn't happen because Helena is passive whereas Helly was the one to initiate their first kiss. 3. Helena is passive when they get to the goat room, asking Mark if they should go in. 4. Helena lets Mark take the lead into the tunnel, and has an amused look on her face. 5. Helena is abnormally quiet during the goat scenes, when Helly would yap and comment about how weird this is. Ep 4. 1. When Irv asks where Helena comes from, her delivery of "I don't know" is very fake; When Mark asks where Helena woke up, she says on the "cliff". 2. She awfully delivers the line "Just wish we knew where we're going". 3. In Irv's tent, Helena's face drops when Irving calls her out, and her tone of voice while saying "Irving" is authoritative, like how Cobel says it. 4. Helena laughs at how ridiculous the story is, probably because she was read it in her childhood and Milkshake is reading it like it's fact. 5. Helena is the one that understood the subtext of "spilling his lineage" as masturbating, while innies that don't have a grasp on the contexts of literature didn't pick it up. Mark seemingly understands after Helena points it out bur Dylan does this awkward laugh along like he pretends he's understanding. 6. Helena brings up Burt to hurt Irv and deter him from further interrogating her. 7. (Double misdirection) Helena's line of "I didn't like who I was on the outside, I was ashamed" is meant to trick viewers into thinking it's Helly, when it's said sincerely by Helena about how she envies Helly's life despite it's circumstances, because she can be free of her restrictions. 8. In Irv's dream, the numbers on the monitor change to the letters E,A,G,N and also morph vaguely into Helena's silhouette from S1E4's recording.

It's wild, the last thing Helly remembers is being tackled at the Lumon Gala and in the next moment she wakes up under water

Jennyjoy

Oh Irv, I love him so much. The way he tenderly held Helly when she finally came back always gets to me. This episode is an emotional roller coaster so by that point I'm emotionally exhausted but so happy for Helly to be back, I just cry. It was fun seeing you pick up the little clues here are there that it was Helena. Helena is icy and calculated. Helly is bold and confident. It was beautiful seeing Britt Lower play them with such nuance.

Christina Paz

I've wondered this too. If it was symbolic, conceptually separating himself into the "good" and the "bad" and as you said, "killing off" the one.

Christina Paz

My brain isn't braining anymore. What is this episode?? No context, no buildup, just straight-up Severance at it's most confusing. Wow... Now I can't wait for the next episode :)

Luiz

Dramatic ending not withstanding, I actually feel like this was one of my least favorite episodes. One of the best endings, though!

Justin Odum

This episode makes me wonder - They talk about Deiter Eagen being Kier's twin, and that each innie has one. But what if Deiter and Kier are the same? Maybe Kier didn't like the part of him that wanted to live in the forest and "tamed" himself by "killing off" the part of him that he didn't like? Maybe that represents Kier's "innie" in some way? this was such a wild episode!

Kathryn Ellis

This one is a favorite of mine. So many great scenes…I think the reason why Mark didn’t recognize Helena as Helly is because in some ways their personalities are the exact same. Helena has to bury that bit of herself in the outie world. Which also may be why she laughed at the story Milchick was telling. I really think more and more that Helena isn’t as much of a willful participant in Lumon as we’ve made her out to be. I admit it took me this whole episode/season to realize that it wasn’t Helly. I feel like most people had it figured out by this point, but the tent scene with Irv was a clue for people because they saw what you saw in Helena’s face. Another hint I discovered after is the baby seal. Often autistics give gifts as a way to show affection or care for someone as we tend to have a more difficult time expressing it otherwise due to our lack of social skills. The same could be said here but obviously without the autism bit…Helena has been raised in a cult and her social skills with people outside of The Board aren’t the greatest. This was her way of placating him. I also like your interpretation of it being a perk. I wouldn’t have thought of it that way. This was such a fun episode and I can’t wait to think of what you think of the rest of the season 😆

Erin

I'm trying to remember what else I was going to say. My brain lost it. That's what age does. Ha. My profile pic is 10 years old. Need to update. I remember it now. The dream a what made Irving certain it was Helena. The numbers on the screen turned into letters and spelled Eagan.

Matt Quinn

yessss its time hehe

Matildathepirate

There's loads of clues its Helena (the most deliberate being fumbling for the computer switch in Ep1 and the lack of elevator beep in Ep2), but you unconsciously/consciously picked it up in previous episodes by just feeling weird about how she was acting. Helly would never be as awkward as Helena was in Ep3 in the hallway with Mark - she just would have kissed him - nor would she feel weird about crawling through the goat hallway. Helly would probably have gone first. And that's not even mentioning all the subtle body language, behavioural stuff (and her lack of the Helly R walk!). Turturro is obviously brilliant in this ep, but incredible stuff from Britt Lower.

Helly R

Dylan didn't tell Mark and Helena about Irving's OTC. It was obvious to everyone he'd had a bad experience.

Matt Quinn

Nah they hadn't thank you, I did want to know! :)

Claudie

Guess someone's mentioned it, but this was filmed in Minnewaska State Park in upstate NY.

Helly R

LET’S GO I need Emmy’s for Britt Lower for this episode

Trish

My favourite episode of the series! I can't wait to watch this reaction
