Autism researcher Simon Baron-Cohen has issued an apology after admitting that he has spent his entire career confusing autistic people with a fictional extraterrestrial humanoid species from the television show, Star Trek.
The mea culpa came after Baron-Cohen published a paper claiming that “people with autism are highly logical. Although the following traits are not listed in the DSM-5, they also have green blood, funky nineties eyebrows and pointy ears.”
“They also tend to be hypermobile, hence the Vulcan salute.”
Baron-Cohen explained: “When you spend as long as I have subtly dehumanising people with autism, it’s an easy mistake to make.“
A former test subject of Baron-Cohen’s, who wished to remain anonymous, commented: “If only I WAS Vulcan. A quick pinch to the neck and problem solved.”

OTOH Vulcans are often treated as fully-formed, valid, even admirable people.
