I am at 2:16:32 ish for the whole Rafe = girlfriend love discussion and I think the interpretation could be different.
I feel as though Rafe’s and Dunk’s relationship is a lot more innocent than romantic love. I know Dunk says he loves Rafe, but he may be mistaking his feelings of companionship love for romantic love. She’s his only friend, the one who cares and protects him in a lot of their interaction with the outside world (she takes the decisions, she directs him, she takes the danger upon herself in their interactions with the guard). She’s a kid but she is still motherly in their dynamic, but not feminine (as in she doesn’t incarnate the woman in his eyes, but the protector). I know Peter Claffey is much older than Dunk, but I think he is intended to be young. Much younger. Thus, in the flashback, he’s probably what we would call a pre-teen. Therefore, he’s probably mistaking his feelings for love, well, the romantic kind, when his feelings are more so companionship love. I don’t think she represents the trope of the dead girlfriend, just the complete destruction of his support network. Maybe there were other friends before, maybe they left, died during the famine of the siege, or just passed of some sickness in the recent past and she is all that he has remaining, and that’s why he’s attached himself so strongly to Ser Allan with her gone

i really loved everything about this episode except the removal of the LANCE THING! i dont understand why they would do that, it's one of those things that really stuck with me from the novellas and its so important to Baelors' character, removing it made him a little less special i think 😭 other than that tho! what an episode, first time i cried to a GoT show (or book?) and it wasn't even at Bealors' death.. just during the battle in general.. brilliant lol

I think Dunk's shield embodies his identity as Sir Duncan the Tall, with it being established that that the device must be his own personal sigil, and Dunk abandoning the shield after the first tilt symbolises Dunk resolving to beat Aerion as Dunk of Flea Bottom.

Yeah that was a ripple delete gone awry, which is wild because I double-check every single edit I make. Or at least I think I do. Oh well, I caught it while adding video.

About revealing Dunk not being a knight through a flashback with Arlan. I think a quite beautiful and tragic way of doing it is if while Arlan was dying he asks Dunk to bring him his sword, intending to knight Dunk but his strength failing before he could do so. Maybe he even starts reciting the vows: "In the name of the Mother, I charge you to defend the young and innocent", then trailing off and collapsing.
It might detract a bit from the theme of the truest knight not being a true knight though. Anyway, that's enough fan fiction about the not-dragon show.

So the crimes of the maesters include (But are not limited to):
1) poisoning Viserys I
2) poisoning the dragon eggs after the dance
3) gaslighting everyone into believing the dragons had 4 legs
4) Poisoning Maekar's mace, killing Baelor
5) poisoning the wildfire, killing Aerion Brightflame

true! and in asoiaf, isn't giving a quick death to someone who's suffering called a "gift of mercy"?hell, his first memory is essentially being called "ma." and of course he chooses to give mercy to aerion rather than acting out of vengeance.
But I disagree w/ our boys that protection is the other virtue aligning dunk with the mother. Protection is also the warrior & the father... it's a perimeter. And we get that form of caring from plenty of other characters. so what sets dunk apart is his nurturing. Whenever we see any actual nurturing behavior in the show-- tenderness, connection, giving space, fuck even staying with the dying--it's in dunk.
I'd argue that the other quiet virtue is discernment. the whole ep shows us that protection without discernment is just duty, waiting without discernment is foolish, and action without discernment is reckless. But when dunk faces Aerion , his choices shift from reflexive to deliberate. patience with discernment is what allows him to access mercy, the fullest embodiment of the mother.

I loved it tbh everything seems so like correct reactions to all. Like dunk just goes reasonably like okay I gotta take him to tell the others. And I just got outa a fight I'ma just mumble about what happened.

I think the part about the mother ties into the ideas of death and denial of relief (of mercy?) in this ep, at least. First we see a dying man under the white horse calling for his mom, for her comfort, for mercy, for an end to his suffering.
Dunk waits for his mother for the same reasons while living in Flea Bottom, and before the trail, now that he's scared shitless and staring death right in the face, he probably thinks about relief from all of this, and mercy too. But he doesn't get any, so he fights.
