He has already, over the past couple of seasons, started to embrace an identity as a *Stark*, bastard or no, and if Lyanna and Rhaegar were married, then he’d be a legitimate Stark through his mother. Personally I think he should use both - bastard Stark colors in honor of Ned, and then diagonally from that the legitimate Stark colors in honor of Lyanna. Targaryen colors in another quadrant, a wildling symbol in the final quadrant, and then a black border around the whole thing for the Black brothers, the shield that guards the realms of men - all realms of men, regardless of house or legitimacy or willingness to kneel.

It would have been SO much more interesting if he actually DID abandon Cersei and became a Secret Third Thing faction unto himself. Maybe he becomes extra unpredictable because he absolutely does not want to be on the mainland with Boots et al. but he does actually care about his baby and so he wants to keep Cersei alive so he’s torn and oscillating between goals and it’s impossible for Dany OR Cersei to keep track of him or figure out who he’s trying to kill (or IF he’s even trying to kill anyone, because one of the goals he’s vacillating between is to just hole up on Pyke!) at any given time.

2024-07-23 16:06:57 +0000 UTCThe frozen lake scene also would have been an impactful moment to introduce wight Hodor. They could make that even better if Jon hadn’t already rediscovered that Bran was alive. Imagine a scenario where Jon hadn’t heard anything about Bran for years, but last he heard he was alive, and then he sees wight Hodor and has to emotionally deal with not just seeing Hodor that way, but also the implication that Bran is probably dead too (maybe he even looks for Bran among the wights!!!), but he doesn’t actually know for sure and has to live in that uncertainty for a while.
