Chapter 21 : The First Mission (Actually Training)

Suddenly burdened with a debt of 100 million yen, Kouki's shoulders slumped as he was led by Line to Kiryu's room.

"Excuse me. I've brought Bright."

Inside the boss’s room that looks like the CEO's office used to welcome visitors. It's a simple room furnished with only a desk, a table and a sofa.

(Just like when I came here last time, this room is really plain for someone in the boss position)

Kiryu stared at Kouki as if he’s evaluating a product.

"Hmm...it looks nice on you, Bright."

"It’s not about whether it’s nice on me or not! Thanks to this I’m suddenly in debt you know?! What am I supposed to do about it!?"

"That amount of debt, you can easily pay it off soon enough."

He moved his gaze to Line after he said so. After Line excused himself, silence dominated the room.

"For now sit down. Regarding your gift, I did some investigation on it from my side."

"You found something on Revived Hunter?!"

Kouki suddenly leaned forward from his sofa.

"Yeah. There is no confirmed holder of Revived Hunter in the records, but the same type of gift existed. That gift is called [Copy Hunter].

That gift allows the user to use another person's ability, but there’s no need to be killed by others. The user just needs to touch the target for 10 seconds. And after copying a new gift, the previously copied gift can’t be used. On top of that, the ability that was copied would disappear after 24 hours.

In terms of ability, it may be a lower ranked version of Revived Hunter, so I believe you should use this gift as reference for yours."

Usage method of Revived Hunter. For Kouki, this knowledge is absolutely necessary.

"It is not clear yet how many abilities Revived Hunter can actually copy at the same time. In the same way, it is not possible to determine how many times you can revive at this point. Therefore, it would be better to keep the status quo.

Fortunately, the three abilities of Speed Star, Invisible Slash and Lonsdaleite are very well balanced. Kouki felt there’s some truth in what the boss said. His mastery over Speed Star, and Invisible Slash after a month of special training are way higher now.

He would like to avoid the situation where he would acquire a new gift with 0 mastery at the sacrifice of his current combat tactics and also his gifts, Speed Star and Invisible Slash.

The same for Lonsdaleite. Although he barely used the gift yet, it will become a terrifying gift as long as he increases his proficiency and so he definitely doesn’t want to lose the gift. Kiryu himself is the best evidence for this.

"Your bodysuit is made specially to match your Speed Star and Invisible Slash gifts. And even with just your current gifts you have now, that alone would make you an outstanding gift holder. So there’s no need to take the risk yet."

There are not many people who have more than one gift. Even in the past, one will be valued highly just by possessing three gifts. That’s not even mentioning that Kouki’s gifts are all ranked A and above and they have high synergy. Hence the conclusion where there is no need to take the risk to forcibly acquire new gifts.

"Roger that. Anyway, I’d like to clear my debts quickly, so can I get a mission now? Preferably the easier ones since it’s my first time and all. ...then again, what does the filths organization usually do?"

"Do I have to start from there? ...well, it can't be helped. Even if you lump all the filths in one word, what they do differs a lot depending on the organization.

If it's a small organization, they are likely to be just some petty crooks like burglars and thieves. For medium-sized organizations, their scale of activity is just slightly bigger in comparison. They are still just small fries from Kuroyume’s point of view though.

For large organizations like us, you have deep connections with the underworld, so you’ll get a large number of requests. This is why we are viewed as an entity that tries to overthrow the nation.... Well, I'll tell you about this later.

But one thing is for sure, we filths are criminals and villains in the eyes of the world. That standard can all be overturned if the fundamentals change however."

Even if Kouki was told that he is a member of an organization trying to overthrow the nation, the reality didn’t really hit him. However, he could see that Kiryu had his visions and goals.

"Well then, I've already prepared your first mission. I'm going to go with you on this particular mission."

"Is that so?"

At this point, Kouki still doesn’t understand the meaning of being accompanied by Kiryu on a mission. If this news were to be known by the other members of Kuroyume, their eyes would have popped out from the surprise.

"But I suppose it’s more of special training rather than mission."

"I’m more thankful for that though! I want to get used to my abilities as soon as possible."

Speed Star and Invisible Slash aside, Kiryu might be able to train him with his Lonsdaleite if he accompanies him. Which is why it's a thankful proposition for him...but he really regretted it one hour later.

Kouki was taken by Kiryu from the New Tokyo area to a lawless restricted area in the mountains of the former Tochigi prefecture.

This is a dangerous area where people cannot live because of the large number of phenoms inhibited there.

"...Boss, you are not telling me that I'm going to be the one to take down this whole thing, are you?"

"Exactly. These materials will be sold at a high price, so if you take them all down your debt will be cut by half."

...Right in front of Kouki’s eyes more than 100 phenoms with a danger level of 4 to 6.

A single phenom with danger level 4 is roughly the same class as a common soldier in the NDF, and danger level 6 phenom needs a skilled soldier at least.

※A bit of digress, but Saejima can easily defeat a danger level 6 phenom while the current Hiro can’t.

No matter how you think about it, this is not something possible for a gifted who has only awakened for a month.

"......You're joking, right?"

"You said you want to pay off your debts as quickly as possible. You also said that you want to get stronger. Don’t worry, I’ll help you when you are about to die. What could be better for you than a mission like this?"

The actual problem is that Kouki has no real combat experience other than that time he fought Kurosaki and Kiryu (the time he played as a passing ally of justice not counted). So his circumstances right now is not where he can honestly be ecstatic about.

"...but why are there so many  phenoms gathered here?"

"Oh, that’s because I personally sprinkled the bait here in advance. Just for you."

Kiryu said so with a big smile. However, to Kouki, he looked like a smiling death reaper.

"They already noticed us here, you know? Go."

"Ughh goddamn it! I'll be damned if I’m going down so easily!"

With Speed Star activated and using that momentum he slammed his fist to the humanoid lizards, Lizardman. The victim was blown far away from Kouki.

He stared at his own fist. His fist that was always battered thanks to the momentum carried by Speed Star is still working just fine.

"This must be thanks to the gloves. Damn, it looks like it's really worth a hundred million yen!"

Lizardman skins can be sold for a lot of money as material to produce bags. There are also demands for other phenom materials, but it is basically forbidden and illegal for anyone other than the NDF and police to come into contact with them outside of their living areas, and there is no way to get hold of them except when NDF thin the phenoms population on a regular basis.

Therefore, the materials obtained by breaking the law of the country, such as these are sold at a high price through the black syndicates.

Seeing Kouki’s hostile action, a group of phenoms pounced on Kouki.

"...alright, I’ll bring down as many as I can!"

Kouki resolved himself before greeting the phenoms.
