Brian Brecommends: MAGIC THE GATHERING

It's time for another Brian Brecommends that goes long because I can't stop talking about a thing. That's right, it's MAGIC THE GATHERING.

Oh, and also Juanpalitoschinos, a great band that just released their debut album!

I've had so much fun playing MtG with friends this past month, and more importantly, actually seeing friends this past month. I'm so bad at socializing, but this game has helped build new friendships and reinforce old friendships with people that I didn't even realize played the game! It's been so nice! Except for all the sleeves I've had to buy. And card boxes. And playmats. But it's fun and it's good for my social life and that means it's a worthwhile expense please don't tell me otherwise i won't listen to you anyway okay time for me to go play more magic bye

whats your favourite commander to play?

I'm so pleased to hear that you had a good prerelease experience! They're always a fun way to get deeper into the game. Funny that you onboarded a lot from that VHS video (gave it a watch and it was definitely entertaining) and LTR commander - commander tending to be one of the more overwhelming ways to learn the game - but I imagine the theme does a lot of heavy lifting for motivation also, whatcha like in Modern? 👀

It is definitely harder than it ought to be to find good two player board/card games! Me and my partner are trying to build up a collection of things we can play together - are there any other games you would recommend?

My friends introducing me to MtG and especially Secret Lair has been the worst financial thing to happen to me ever and I will never recover.

So what's your favorite deck so far?

I don’t suppose I could foist my circa-2013 cards on you? I got into it back then but didn’t like what I perceived as a “pay to win” ethos (This is only half a joke, there may be a message in a bottle that has to circumnavigate the Atlantic, the Americas and the Pacific to wash up on the shores of Long Beach. Alternatively I may just eBay them)

Great to hear your Prerelease experiences have been mostly enjoyable- I love a good prerelease with positive vibes, where players new and old are just enjoying chit-chat with each other about whatever new set they're about to play. Commander's definitely a hard way to onboard, since there's typically so much going on in a 4-player game. Once a person has a solid grip on the mechanics, though, I can't think of a better way to play the game. Good commander games are as much an opportunity to hang out and enjoy others' company as it is to play the game itself!

I know you were trying to avoid screens, but one way to save money is playing on tabletop simulator! My husband and his worldwide friends play on Fridays using that program and they're able to build decks cost free
