The Original Cast at the Movies 43: Dick Tracy (1990)

Stephen Sondheim took home one of this film’s 3 Oscars. None of those were for the screenplay. Roddy Flynn and Robert W Schneider join Patrick to break down this beautifully beautiful film.

Disney, man. They sneaky. I don't know which one she shot first, probably 'Dick Tracy' because it was in editing for a LONG time. But it is hilarious that the same year this was at the Oscars, she won hers for 'Misery'.

Wonderful! (I assume this is in reference to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, correct?)

Wow. I was 10 when this came out. I watched this movie in the theater and probably 50 times on the Disney Channel, but I don’t think I’ve thought about it since probably 1992. Because of this, I did not realize this was my first Sondheim exposure. All of this time, I thought my first Sondheim experience was watching West Side Story on TNT one New Year’s Eve. I just watched 20 clips on YouTube and it all came rushing back. I remember loving the LOOK of this film and it all came rushing back. Definitely didn’t realize Kathy Bates was in this until today. I wonder if she filmed this before or after Misery.

Share away, I would be honored!

You are not the first person to raise this point. I think this may be a case of me not seeing the show hindering my full appreciation of it. Would you mind if I shared these messages on the next Intermission?

Also does everything have to be challenging? Obviously some things should, but can’t some things just be hilarious? Or does adding humor to the challenging parts make it even funnier?

I have cerebral palsy and use a wheelchair. I usually get a kick out of jokes where someone pretends to be disabled for con purposes, especially in a musical like this where it’s supposed to be funny. I would especially die laughing if part of it is about how they get miraculously cured in a church? I don’t know, I’ve never seen it. But I would probably laugh without being offended but then again that’s just me.
