Dear Patrick, I was just lying in bed and listening to your Intermission and I was just tickled pink by your shout out. That was the second best thing to happen in 2021.

The book is so good to that show and the sets are incredible. Very lucky it survives

Yes I saw that for the first time years ago. I am so glad that Japanese television filmed it, so that we can actually see the original Broadway production as it is a Sondheim show that I’ve never seen a revival of, or even a regional theater production. I have had my vinyl record of Pacific Overtures since the eighties and I was so excited to finally put faces to voices.

It's one of my favorites as well. Such an interesting and timeless show. Did you know this existed? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQ546PASgHI

Patrick, I really enjoyed your conversation about this documentary, especially your talk about Pacific Overtures. As a history nerd, it is one of my favorite Sondheim shows and one that I think is often unfairly overlooked in discussions of his work. I believe that the philosophy espoused in that song is a very meaningful way to look at history. Just one note though, Admiral Robert Peary (1856-1920) of Ragtime who may have discovered the North Pole is not the same person as Commodore Matthew Perry (1794-1858) of Pacific Overtures and the opening up of Japan.
