Some thoughts: I started playing 2019. Never went to a LGS but tried playing on the PlayEDH discord. They have a tier system which I feel could be a part of the solution if done right. There were moderators checking everyones decks before you could play. Unfortunately I didnt quite align with their tier system as I also believe you can put gaeas cradle or necropotence to boost your jank deck and they had it banned for their lower jankier tiers. To me the difference is important because I believe the mindset of it tells a lot. It seemed to be you move up the tiers by upgrading your deck meaning that the focus or goal was to make the deck high powered and only newer players with smaller collections played in the lowers tiers. I also asked if there were people who deliberately played without combo but that sparked some intense chat debating which was not really my intention. I dont care if other people do it but I know the experience I am after and with limited time for playing on my hands I was interested in finding likeminded people. There was no one which I was surprised by. Found this channel at some point and its the closest I've come apart from my own playgroup to a community which has casual as a focus. I love all aspect of the game and of course people can play what they like. I also know the experience I am after personally and finding likeminded people is key for that. Does anyone know if there are other discords or places to connect with people who would like to play casual EDH over spelltable?

re:”dragging out the game”
i guess i mostly agree with “longer games are fun” but personally, i judge how much fun a game is by interaction, right? it makes sense that a longer game with a lot of interaction from all players is good, but if i’m getting mana flooded or mana screwed or i can’t draw answers and can’t interact, then i really feel how long the game is dragging on. usually it’s because i feel i’m not advancing my own board state or can’t deal with the problem on the board

i’m super lucky to play with the people i do and the people i tend to meet in LGSs. around 9:40 you mention that in competitive formats, you nearly always have to have access to some sort of counterplay to a game winning combo. in MY experience, with my friends and LGSs, people who combo off have either 1.) conceded the game to allow people to play the rest of the game, or 2.) help other players try to find ways to counter the combo. and when they can’t it’s never any hard feelings, anyways.

Thank you so much for making this video, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my long-winded question. Awesome stuff like this is why EDH Deckbuilding is the best MTG Content around. I'm a university student and this was the mtg club at my university, so it's possible that preferring competitive is a generational thing. I definitely miss my old playgroup, sadly we're all at different schools now. Time to make some new friends and impart on them the sort of philosophy we follow. You did make some really good points though, especially regarding expensive cards. Looking forward to checking out that video.

I got into magic playing with friends with what cards we bought at the PX or Walmart back in 2009. We played at our homes with what we had and that was it for years. I got into EDH in 2013 while deployed to Afghanistan, there were plenty of people playing it. Honestly it was the most fun I’ve ever had playing, because it was just so damn difficult to upgrade our decks. We mainly played with what we took with us or bought online. I took a break from Magic from 2016-2020 (career and kids). I got back into it watching videos online and when the game stores opened back up I went to check things out. My Uril, Atheros (group hug), Numot, and Grenzo, were all quickly out classed. Now the only place I can find enjoyment when I go into a card shops is with the people playing precons. I’ve upgraded my decks and built new ones, I just can’t participate with the arms race culture at my local LGS’s. There is something so dissatisfying about playing against player who just want to win as fast as they can. On the note regarding what to ban, my suggestion would be to target mana rocks, free counter spells, and maybe some five color commanders. I truly can’t find tables not playing at least one five color new commander.

I got into commander because the games were so varied and not repetitive. IMO if your deck is just gunning for a single combo every time it defeats the purpose of a 100 unique card deck. I also miss the days when I would make decks from whatever cards I had in my little collection. I think the popularity of youtube videos and guides and new players reliance on them has been pushing people to make more and more similar decks. My playgroup also has always rolled to pick what decks each of us will play in any given game. It makes it a lot more interesting and usually prevents people from picking decks that are a clear counter to someone else's deck.
