Sales taxes changes by Patreon

Hi every,

Some of you may already have heard this elsewhere, but in case you haven't, sales taxes are coming to Patreon on July 1st.

Patreon is required by law to apply sales taxes on the services and goods provided by creatives using their platform, frankly, something I am happy to see. People could use Patreon for their subscription service to avoid sales taxes, because any donation through Patreon was considered charity. This gave Patreon an unfair advantage as a subscription platform that I am glad to see go, and I find it atrocious it's been allowed to go on for this long!

I don't expect anyone here to be affected by these changes, as I do not use the platform to distribute any services or goods. All tier rewards are automatically handled and require no work to be done by me, which means I can reasonably justify that all rewards are free for me to produce.

I also think now is as good a time as any to mention my stance on Patreon. I use Patreon because it provides me and you with good services for supporting the development of Battle Mage Royal, and for that I like Patreon. However, Patreon is a company, and they always seek to increase their profits, and because of this they quite often suggest I do things that are blatantly in their own self-interest, and I will have none of that.

Patreon likes to brand themselves on being the protectors of independent creatives, but they don't do so out of high ideals; they do so because it earns them money, which is fine; I don't mind people earning money on good services. What I do mind, is a company gaining market share by circumventing tax laws, then having the audacity to ask me and other creatives to break it to our backers, in order to soften the blow it has on their bottom line and brand!

I am adding this bit because I wish to hold them accountable for their bullshit, and I won't allow them to strong arm me into playing it down to you, because my bottom line is dependent on their bottom line. They actively attempt to make me buy into their brand so I can sell it to you, and worse, make our community equivalent to Patreon customers. That is when things become hypocritical, because they push for independent creatives to become dependent on Patreon.

I hope you will continue to support the game on Patreon, and I hope to bring you other options for supporting the game soon. I have started using Twitch, and when I hit affiliate status, people will be able to support the game by subscribing to the channel. I have also discussed the game with Nutaku, and hope to one day have a third option that is handled by a company dedicated to lewd games.

Cheers,

Tinon
