Not no reason. Recall that after Wenyuan’s soul finished dispersing/merging, Kayla inherited some of his sentiments and tendency. Recall when kayla broke into tears in front of the empress dowager almost immediately afterwards, or, more relevantly, the newfound trouble in dealing with chujiao. That’s explicitly called out. Implicitly, it’s easy enough to understand that the merge at least reduced or eliminated kayla’s *discomfort,* even if it didn’t create interest. Besides that, it isn’t at all historically rare for people, and especially those of prominent background, to value the continuation of their family regardless of their sexual preference. This is a logical extension of thought from the kinds of cultures that use arranged marriages for political reasons.

Either make this a part of your story or don't introduce it at all. Using Kayla's preoccupation with "survival" doesn't cut it forever.

We have no reason to believe that Kayla is sexually interested in women, yet this aspect is completely ignored in your writing. Future children are off-handedly mentioned and this doesn't lead to any awkwardness or pause in their conversation. Which tells me, that they're having relatively normal and frequent sexual encounters. But you make no attempt to show us their intimate interaction and how Kayla actually feels about it. At this point in the story
