Added 2023-10-07 13:44:28 +0000 UTCHoping that my scheduled post actually works this time: I'll be otherwise occupied handling twenty screaming children at a family reunion, including one particularly troublesome nephew who has a track record of climbing into my trash can, eating something off a tree and then puking onto my plate and my clothes, as well as jumping off flights of stairs (he was fine).

Yup that's about how I expected that to go. Kayla is the textbook example of someone who is so used to using subterfuge and round about ways of addressing problems that she forgets the direct method even exists. This same thing happened with the Empress Dowager...she spend days agonizing over how to pay that debt until a subordinate told her "just do the most obvious direct thing" i.e. talk to the Emperor. Using a consistent character flaw to drive the conflict is something I can appreciate but man is it frustrating to watch. It could end up being her tragic flaw and we end up with a greek style tragedy, or it could be a learning moment where Kayla learns that occasionally being direct is both easier and better that being sneaky. I'm hoping it at least ends with Kayla deciding that she will direct at least when it comes to her marriage. Poor Ashina :(
