The big reason for change players getting paid is players sued because they still used their images in EA games after they graduated. The March Madness tournament makes almost a billion dollars in profits. John Oliver did a great episode on this subject on Last week tonight.

2024-01-01 20:38:57 +0000 UTCthe reasoning they gave is "theyre paid with an education" which is complete BS, they often just give them the bare minimum or less in education because they really want them focusing on sports, and only a fraction of a percent will ever go on to professional careers. so theyre really sacrificing their bodies for the profit of these sports programs while getting very little in return. They changed the rules around this tho, where students are allowed to get deals for advertising and stuff now, but really only the top players benefit from that. so its not perfect.
