17 - The Channel's First Year

My ms paint skills are pretty poor but I think the graph should be readable. I thought some of you might find that interesting.

Okay! So, that was pretty crazy. The view counter for the channel just ticked over to 1 million. 200,000 of that came in the past 3 days. Patreon hit 100 pledges. Subscribers is about to get to 27,000. It was around 15,000 the day No Man's Sky went up.

I'm freaking out to be perfectly honest. My viewership just doubled in such a short time that I don't know how to handle it. When I first started I would picture how 100, then 500, then 1,000 people would look like in an area. It quickly becomes unfathomable. But it's more than that--there are twice as many people who want to be alerted when the next video goes up. There's a... culture... I guess, almost, of people that I'm used to seeing. Names and avatar icons that I recognize in the comments of each video. That's going to be completely different. These new people won't be stumbling onto my channel through a link they saw and being surprised. They come with expectations.

I know it doesn't matter because all I can do is keep going as I always have. But holy hell is it intimidating. Some of you new guys pledged a _lot_ of money. Some of you have been continuing support for _months_. All I can say is thank you and hope that the new stuff lives up to it.

I'm not doing pledge rewards just yet. I want to a video soon that reviews the channel and makes some of the policies I've discussed here "official", since it'll be stated in a video. I'll probably talk about pledge rewards then. This month should have Fallout 4 DLC and Dark Souls 3 DLC (depending on how long it is). I'm a few days behind because of all of the messages and comments I replied to over the past few days but my wife and I have aligned our schedules much better.

I was also thinking about doing a quick video that introduces Subnautica, The Long Dark, and Don't Starve? I don't know if that's a good fit though.

Oh, and someone requested that I make a post here announcing each new video that goes up. That's a good idea and I should have been doing it already. So if those kinds of emails might annoy you, you might want to turn the notification off in advance.

Thank you again. This week has been crazy. Turns out what happened at the end of No Man's Sky was lucky after all.

You are on Mr. Anderson's wild ride now!

I'd very much like to see Don't Starve and Subnautica. Not familiar with The Long Dark. Definitely don't worry about expectations. Do you, that's why we're all here in the first place.

Man you deserve all the subs you can get. You put so much work into your writing and editing, even for an 1+hour video (or 3+hour) that's it's kind of insane. From one Patreon funded channel to another, my only advice is just keep doing exactly what you already are. Don't worry about pleasing ANYBODY's particular expectations and needs, and keep making the videos YOU want to make. It's what's gotten you this far, and it's what makes your channel so compelling to check up on. Just keep doing you man. Dog bless Joseph.

The NMS video surprised me. It's, I think, the first really in-depth look at exactly WHAT the problems were with NMS, and I think that's why it didn't come off as you flogging a dead horse for views since bagging on NMS has become very popular lately. Like... that last bit at the end, how in the hell does that even make it through internal QA testing? Jesus. I don't think you should worry about "what viewers will expect." Just be you. Just keep doing your thing. I think you're charting a course to join the ranks of other highly regarded games-analysis types like Matthewmatosis, Noah Caldwell-Gervais, SuperBunnyhop, etc just by doing what you're doing already. Let the viewers worry about themselves, you just keep doing whatever you're comfortable with. You clearly produce excellent content, otherwise none of us would be here :)

I've been binging on your videos for the past month, every-time I feel like taking a break from work, I watch your videos, and I will continue to do so until no new videos exist and I am tired of rewatching the old ones. <3 you joe! Good luck on your future videos!

Congratulations Mr. Anderson!

I have been subscribed since the Hearthstone video. I will not lie, when I saw the No Man's Sky video, I thought you were going to beat a dead horse. I thought everyone had said everything that could be said. But your analysis of the game and its problems was in-depth and insightful. You spent more time playing that game than I have on some of my favorite games. Your dedication to your videos is obvious. Spending 50+ hours playing a bad game, just to explain why it is bad is a level of dedication some of the most popular games reviewers do not have. That is why I like Joseph Anderson, and that is why I get excited when I see one of your videos in my inbox. Because I know that I am about to watch an intellectual analysis, made by a dedicated person, who cares about accurately and fairly judging a game. I'm obviously not the only one. You are only going to keep growing, and you definitely deserve it. Keep on making the great videos.

Your No Man's Sky video was one of the most upvoted posts on /r/Games, and that's what brought me in. I have since watched all of the FO4 analysis and most of Dark Souls. I find the work highly educational and fantastic to watch. I look forward to catching the rest once I get to play them.

I subscribed after I watched your No Man's Sky video, then I watched all your videos uploaded in the past 7 months in like 3 days. I saw you had a Patreon and immediately pledged. I love your content, keep up the awesome work :)

Hello! one of those new subscribers chiming in. I came in through the No Man's Sky line on Reddit, but was first diverted by your impressive Actraiser and Darkest Dungeon Critiques. Though I don't always agree with your points, I'm consistently impressed by both the time and emotion you put into these videos. Looking forward to joining your community.

Thanks for all the content you do! I know that when I see a new video by you on my notifications I won't be too bored at work. Really, thanks again and can't wait for more!
