So the thing about not using EQ/comp presets is really mostly just applicable to getting a track to fit into a mix. In a case like this where you're either just playing the guitar by itself or playing over accompaniment that's clearly subordinate to the guitar track (thus allowing you to make the guitar the sole focus of the mix), there's really nothing wrong with finding a preset that sounds good and rolling with it. Sure, it's definitely not what a mixing engineer is gonna do when working on a regular music release, but that's not what you're doing here.
Also, I may be in the minority, but I'm actually very partial to the sounds of cheap electric guitars (but not often acoustic guitars lol). I've had occasions where I've chosen to use my MIM Strat over my Am Std Strat for recordings because it just fit the bill better. There's this interesting grit you can get from a cheap guitar that I've never found in nicer guitars. In fact, I'm soon gonna get started on a project guitar where I'm gonna build my own 12-string Strat and I plan on using pickups from a MIM or Squier over nicer pickups bc I'm going for that kind of sound.
