This gas could be ingested from the atmosphere - additional mass. But what if we restrict it to be mostly from the biomass? It would have to consist mostly of elements: oxygen, hydrogen and carbon. Thus it could be any mix of oxygen, hydrogen and methane, ethane, propane etc. That's an explosive mix if there ever was one but it could double down as energy storage.

2023-03-14 23:00:12 +0000 UTCBut what if the creature was a gas bag? Dead meat is know to produce a lot of gas. Gas has low density so It would increase radius wothout needing more mass. Also, this would avoid molten meat core as now it is gas, not meat. And you could justify gross explosion when such creature is killed...
