Welcome to another episode of cutting room floor! Today's video is an extension of my Tekken 8 Review, where I talk about my thoughts on the future of competitive fighting games as an E-sport (hint: grim), but also share some recent insights I have gained about what I think the nature of "True E-sports" (as I call them) is, versus the artificial competition created by publishers that seems to intentionally chip away at skill and depth in favor of marketing.

There was a recent interview with Itagaki where he was asked what his thoughts were on the decline of FGs. His answer was basically that FGs due to their limited CPU usage could really focus on environments and character models to show off what any given console was capable of and were often the best looking games, and that a mass audience would buy the games simply for that reason. I think he even commented on FPS games basically having that role anymore. Makes sense. I remember everyone I knew who had a console had at least one fighting game and one racing game, not for any real interest in the genre but simply for the graphics.

2025-10-04 21:52:09 +0000 UTCas a Quake Enjoyer of 25+ years, i very much approve of its inclusion as an example in the discussion :^) and boy oh boy do i wish we lived in a world/universe where the "top e-sport" was something like quake3/cpma/ql or ut99/2k4, not to mention even more pipe dream stuff like living in a world where virtua fighter is the top fighting game series great episode!
