As far as an actual narrative goes, I imagine he experienced a brief obsession for magical ponies in elementary school, even to the point of wishing he could be one himself.
Unfortunately, due to a high volume of wishes for world peace that came in during that same time period, the wishworks fulfillment department would be backed up for the next decade or so, and only half of his late order is delivered, much to his surprise.
